[SoH 26-006] Elleen Chebet from kenya : Using sports to fight pollution.
H –
Home Region
My home
region is Nakuru, a growing city known for its beautiful environment, tourism,
and active youth sports culture. Many young people in Nakuru enjoy sports such
as football, athletics, cycling, and basketball. However, as the town continues
to grow, environmental challenges such as air pollution, littering, and traffic
congestion are also increasing.
One major
issue I observed is that many people use motorcycles and cars even for short
distances, which contributes to smoke emissions and poor air quality. Plastic
waste is also commonly seen along roads and around sports grounds. Despite
this, cycling is not widely promoted as both a sport and an environmentally
friendly means of transport.
This
inspires me to create a project that combines sports and environmental
conservation to encourage young people to protect their surroundings while
staying active and healthy.
O –
Overview, Observation & Objective
After
observing different parts of Nakuru this is what I realized….there is
- Increased use of vehicles
leads to air pollution.
- Plastic waste dumped near
roads, playgrounds, and public spaces.
- Limited environmental
awareness among young people during sports activities.
- Few organized community
programs linking sports with climate action.
I also
realized that many young people are passionate about sports and would easily
participate in environmental activities if they were made fun, engaging, and
competitive.
Objective
The main
objective of this project is:
- To promote cycling as a sport
and eco-friendly mode of transport.
- To reduce littering and create
awareness about environmental conservation.
- To encourage youth
participation in climate action through sports.
- To make Nakuru cleaner,
healthier, and greener.

Plan
The “Pedal
Green Nakuru.” The idea is to organize cycling events and environmental
clean-up activities led by young people.
The
project would include:
- Monthly community cycling
events around Nakuru town.
- “Ride and Clean” activities
where cyclists collect litter along their routes.
- Tree planting sessions after
every cycling competition.
- Educational talks on
pollution, recycling, and climate change.
- Encouraging schools to
introduce cycling clubs and eco-sports days.
- Partnering with local
businesses to sponsor reusable water bottles and recycling bins.
To make
the project more exciting, participants would receive certificates, medals, or
recognition awards for environmental leadership and teamwork.
The
campaign slogan would be:
“Ride
for Your Health, Ride for the Earth.”

Execute & Example
To put the
idea into action, I would organize a pilot event involving schools, youth
groups, and local cyclists in Nakuru.
During the
event:
- Participants would cycle
through selected routes while spreading messages about clean air and
environmental protection.
- Teams would stop at designated
areas to collect plastic waste and separate recyclable materials.
- Environmental volunteers would
educate community members on proper waste disposal and the importance of
reducing pollution.
- At the end of the event,
participants would plant trees around schools and sports grounds to
improve the environment.
Photos,
videos, and stories from the event would be shared on social media to inspire
more communities across Kenya to combine sports with environmental action.
The
expected impact of the project includes:
- Cleaner roads and sports
grounds in Nakuru.
- Increased environmental
awareness among youth.
- Promotion of healthy
lifestyles through cycling.
- Reduced pollution through
eco-friendly transport.
- Stronger community involvement
in protecting the environment.
Through “Pedal
Green Nakuru,” sports become more than competition …..they become a
powerful tool for creating a healthier and greener future.

1. Causes and Current Situation of the Local Problem — Very Appropriate
ReplyDeleteThe project clearly explains local environmental issues in Nakuru, such as the increasing use of cars and motorcycles, air pollution, and plastic waste, and connects them well to the specific situation of the region.
2. Use of Visual Materials — Needs Improvement
The project does not currently include visual materials such as photos, graphs, or maps. Adding photos of litter, traffic, or pollution in Nakuru would help show the environmental problems more clearly.
3. Feasibility of the Proposed Solutions — Very High
The project suggests practical activities such as cycling events, litter collection, tree planting, and school cycling clubs. These activities are realistic because young people and local communities can directly participate in them.
4. Effectiveness of the Proposed Solutions — High
The proposed activities are directly connected to the environmental problems. Promoting cycling can help reduce air pollution, while clean-up activities and tree planting can improve the local environment.
Overall Reason for Selection:
I selected this project because it clearly identifies environmental problems in Nakuru and creatively connects cycling, a sport that many young people enjoy, with environmental protection. The proposed solutions are practical and can directly contribute to creating a cleaner and healthier community.
I think your idea is great because the plan is specific and can help solve local problems.
ReplyDeleteI liked this SOH because the environmental problems you observed in Nakuru, such as traffic, air pollution, and plastic waste, were clearly connected to your plan. Promoting cycling and combining it with clean-up activities is a practical solution that young people can actually participate in. I also think sharing photos and videos from the activities would be a good way to show the results and encourage others to join. I hope “Pedal Green Nakuru” inspires more young people to protect their community while staying active! 🚲🌱
ReplyDeleteClear & Important Problem (Good): Accurately pinpoints pollution causes in Ulaanbaatar from everyday habits—disposable plastic bag overuse and short-distance driving (<10 mins)—rather than macro-industrial structures.
ReplyDelete* Feasibility of Solution (Excellent): Highest feasibility, focusing on actionable micro-habits (tumbler/ecobag discounts, "Walk for the Sky" walking challenge) that youth and citizens can start immediately without legislative or budgetary delays.
* Sustainability of Solution (Moderate): Aims for long-term impact by shifting mindsets and fostering everyday habits among local citizens.
* Clarity & Persuasiveness of Plan (Moderate): Highly intuitive logic connecting problem diagnosis directly to individual action.
I love how you turned young people's passion for sports into climate action! "Ride for Your Health, Ride for the Earth" is such a catchy slogan. Your plan is very well organized, with schools, cyclists, and local businesses all involved. I'm cheering for Pedal Green Nakuru!
ReplyDeleteI chose this idea because it connects several local problems, such as air pollution and plastic waste, with something young people already enjoy—sports. The monthly cycling events, clean-up activities, tree planting, and environmental education make the idea practical and meaningful. It could benefit the community by making Nakuru cleaner while also encouraging young people to exercise and become more environmentally conscious. Because the events can be held regularly and schools, youth groups, and local businesses can participate, I think the project has good potential to continue for a long time.
ReplyDelete“Pedal Green Nakuru” in Kenya, has high feasibility and effectiveness. It combines cycling, litter collection, environmental education, and tree planting, allowing it to address several environmental issues at the same time. It is also creative because it combines sports with environmental protection and aims to spread the idea to other communities through social media. Since it mainly uses bicycles and volunteer activities, it can be carried out at a relatively low cost, although some additional costs will be needed for trees, cleaning equipment, and event management. Overall, its effectiveness is one of its strongest points.
