Hi everyone. My name is Randy and I'm from Guyana.
For me the jamboree was better than expected. I know most people were disappointed when we were evacuated (and I was too), but I got some of my best and most favorite memories then.
Our country was evacuated to the Korean Air dorms, where we stayed along with the korean scouts. We were exposed to so many activities such as sight seeing and we were even assigned the task of creating a video reviewing the jamboree.
Overall visiting Korea was one of the best experiences of my life and i can truly say that it is the most beautiful and breathtaking place to be
I'm so thankful for the hospitality of the Korean Air staff, members from Gochujang Village and members from Imsil Village. We were treated like royalty and I will forever be grateful for them.
These are from our visit to Imsil Cheese village, where we learned how to make cheese and pizzas
These are from Gochujang Village, where we leaned to make gochujang pastes and tteok-bokki with the Portuguese scouts
A group picture of the entire Guyana Contingent
During our pre-jamboree activity, we had the opportunity to visit a shooting range where I won a few prizes for distance and target shooting
Some of our korean friends we made during our stay at the Korean Air dormitory after the evacuation
We had the exciting experience of visiting an aerospace museum while at the korean air dormitory
Some of my most favorite pictures are of the sunsets in korea
Hi I'm Randy from Guyana. If anyone has any questions please feel free to contact me. I'd love to answer whatever questions you have. 안녕히 가세요.✌🏾
ReplyDeleteHi Randy! Creating a video must have been a fun project. Is there a particular moment from the jamboree that stands out to you in the video?
ReplyDeleteHi Joy. I think one thing that really stood put to me from the jamboree was a hiking activity my country attended. Unfortunately we were unable to do most of the activities due to the constant cancelations but the hiking was my absolute favorite. I loved getting to experience the beauty of korea's landscape. How about you? Is there any particular thing about the jamboree that stood out to you?
DeleteI had a great time preparing breakfast and dinner. Trying out new recipes and cooking Korean dishes ourselves was really enjoyable. Sometimes it was challenging, but overall, I really enjoyed it. I still wish I had taken the cookbook so I could continue cooking these recipes after returning home 😅.
DeleteHi Joy, I completely understand how you feel. I love to cook so i cooked for my group most of the Jamboree and it was really exciting to cook meals from somewhere that is very culturally different than Guyana, although my favorite thing there wasn't cooked, it was the tune in the minion package. Did you get to try it out? What was your favorite dish at the jamboree itself?
ReplyDeleteYes, I remember the Minion tuna package! It was really good, especially with the crackers 😋. But, for me, my favorite dish was the dumplings for breakfast. They were a little weird at first but eventually I grew to really love them.
DeleteHi Randy! I’m kellen from Rwanda, And what are the most popular dish in your country? And is there any traditional food there??
DeleteHi Joy, I'm glad someone shares my sentiments about the tuna, and your dumplings reminds me of my feelings toward Bibimbap. At first i didn't really enjoy it, but overtime i grew quite fond and now i miss it terribly.
ReplyDeletewhat was your least favourite dish you tried there?
DeleteNot a dish, exactly, but a drink. There was this drink that was given to us for lunch one day. It came as a powder in a bottle and all you had to do was add water to it. I've searched online and apparently its name is misu and the powder itself is called misu-garu. Anyway, I hated it 😅. I'm trying to be nice but honestly I had to pour it out. I was not a fan 😶.
DeleteDid you get to try this drink? What was your least favourite dish?
I never got to try the Misu, but from your review I'll count that as a blessing. I tried a lot of weird things but my least favorite thing was the red bean popcicle they were giving out. The texture was my biggest problem, not the taste. It was just very grainy and I did not enjoy it
ReplyDeleteDid you get to try everything you wanted to do? I know for me I did not. Most of the activities were cancelled due to the heat and then the evacuation happened so I missed out on most of the activities at the jamboree. What was something you really wanted to try at the jamboree itself?
ReplyDeleteI also didn't get to try everything I wanted to do 🫤. In fact, we only ended up doing one assigned Jamboree activity which was the rope course at the forest. I really wanted to do the water activites at the beach but we missed out on that. Otherwise, I still really enjoyed myself at the camp.
DeleteWhich activities had you wanted to try?
I wanted to try all the water activities as well as parasailing. The only activity that we really got to do was hiking. I loved it.
ReplyDeleteWhat was the rope course like? This is the first time I'm hearing about that activity
The rope course was really fun! It was like a big jungle gym up in the trees. You have to climb, balance, and zip line. It's a bit scary and tiring but super exciting. I would do it again if I had the chance.
DeleteThat reminds me of an activity we did on our pre-jamboree experience and that was really nice. Did you guys participate in the pre and post jamboree experience?
ReplyDeleteNo, we didn't get to participate 🫤. But it sounds like you did! What activities did you guys get to participate in?
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteFor the pre jamboree activity we stayed at Gochujang village where they make the red pepper paste and for the post jamboree activity we stayed at the Imsil Cheese village where they make different cheeses and all kinds of dairy products. I posted about some of the activities we did in each village in my post above
ReplyDeleteOh, I hadn't realised that those visits were part of pre/post jamboree experience 😅.
DeleteStaying at those places must have been so cool. Your pizza looks like it was delicious 😋. I love cheese and pizza, so I would've for sure enjoyed visiting the Imsil Cheese village a lot. And I'm sure the Gochujang Village was a nice experience. What was your favorite part of those visits?
Hiiii Randy,How lucky that you were able to live with the Korean scouts, it was surely very cool, I hope to spend time with them, Did you visit any place that you liked more than the others?
ReplyDeleteHi Renata. The korean scouts were very nice and we were equally surprised when we were placed with them because it was only 10 Guyanese scouts in total. I would say that my favorite place was the Korean Air training center where we got to experience what being a flight attendant was like. It was such a unique experience. During the jamboree though, I really loved our Hiking experience. It was by far the best. Was there any place pr activity you enjoyed the most Renata?
DeleteI hope to talk and have a Korean friend !!, koran air training center sounds very cool,In the case of Mexico, when they evacuated us, Lotte Academy welcomed us, and took us to visit their park and the place where they made ice cream 😋, I think my favorite place was Lotte world and the beaches of Busan
DeleteHi Joy. I would say that best part of those trips was getting to interact with korean scouts and they taught me some basic korean. And the cooking as well, because i love to cook🤭
ReplyDeleteThat must have been so fun! Did you try making any of the dishes back home?
DeleteHi Renata. Lotte academy sounds super exciting. Ironically both times we were scheduled to do a water activity we ended up not making it, so visiting the beaches sounds super fun. I hope you enjoyed it. Was there any similar activities for you guys at the jamboree?
ReplyDeleteThe people at Lotte were always very friendly, the Mexican scouts appreciated them a lot, in the camp we did not have an aquatic activity in general, just days before the jamboree we went to the beach, and in the jamboree I spend some of my days in the stands of food , also if you want you can go to see my blog 😋
DeleteHi Renata. A visit to the beach sounds absolutely fantastic. Ironically everytime we had a water activity we never got to make it. Was there any similar activity for you guys at the jamboree? Also did you get to make ice-cream yourself?
ReplyDeleteHiiiii sorry for answer late, Yes, visiting the beaches was quite exciting, in water activities we only went to the beach but there were no similar ones apart from that,No, we couldn't make ice cream, they just informed us a little about how the company worked and they gave us some ice cream to eat on the way
DeleteHi Joy. I actually made kimchi and kimchi fried rice myself at home, they were both very delicious and I attempted to make the tteok bokki like they taught us at gochujang village but I didn't have all the ingredients
ReplyDeleteIt's still really cool that you were able to make two dishes 😅. Hopefully you'll be able to make the tteok bokki someday and I hope you'll share how it turned out 🫶.
DeleteHi Renata. I unfortunately didn't get to try much from the food stands. What was your favorite dish you tried there? Also the people at Lotte Academy do sound nice. For our post jamboree activity we had the opportunity to make cheese and pizza from scratch so that was a really fun experience. Weird question, did the ice-cream taste different than back home?
ReplyDeleteHiiii Randy, I have to favorite food from the stands, the pizza of Italia, and the hotcakes and French fries of Canada, yeah lotte have big installations and all the time we felt very comfortable, it is one of the places I miss the most!! hmmm the ice cream, yeah it taste different maybe more sweet , There is a kiwi one that they sold at the jamboree, it was my favorite! He eats about 2 a day, he came like in a basi and had some pieces of the fruit!
DeleteHi Joy. I am excited to make the tteok bokki at home and I already have some of the ingredients, I will definite share when I do make it. Is there any korean dish that you miss at home?
ReplyDeleteI really miss those dumplings we had for breakfast—they were so delicious. I’ve been wanting to try making them at home but haven’t found the motivation yet 😅. Hearing about your cooking has inspired me, so I’ll probably give it a try soon!
DeleteHi Renata, the food from the stands sound so lovely, I wish I had the chance to try the pizza especially because that is my favorite. I am 100% with you on the love for the kiwi flavored stuff. I had never really eaten kiwi before because it is quite expensive in my country so when I tried the drinks and the popsicles in korea I fell in love. I spent most of my money on kiwi drinks at the convenient store. Also what is basi? I'm not really familiar with that word
ReplyDeleteHi Randy , that’s interesting I hear that in much countries fruits are very expensive, How does that work? In the case of Mexico we are one of the largest producers of fruits and vegetables that is why it is quite cheap here, and sorry for the word its glass but I have the autocorrector in Spanish
DeleteYeah kiwi is so awesome I also spend much of my money in food and candies
DeleteHi Joy, that's good to hear and I can't wait to hear all about how it turned out. What kind of dumplings were they and how did they taste (sweet or savory etc)?
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteThese are the dumplings I am talking about. They were savory dumplings in a soup, but I just ate the dumplings on their own because they were so good. They had a great flavor, with the right amount of seasoning.
DeleteI'll try making them with less soup this time since I didn't enjoy the soup as much. And I won't use rice cakes at all. But otherwise, they were perfect.
Wow Joy, that looks and sounds delicious can't wait to see the result. Was there any drink you really enjoyed from your visit? For me, I fell in love with the kiwi juice and surprisingly soy milk. Did you try anything you particularly enjoyed?
ReplyDeleteI'll have to admit that I was already in love with this drink before hand but it was just so good there that I loved it again 😂. The banana milk that was given to us one lunch time was just so good that I was looking for seconds 😅.
DeleteI sadly never got to try the kiwi juice but I did try the soy milk. I can't say I liked it all that much but it wasn't too bad 🤷.
Hi Renata. Certain fruits such as strawberries and kiwi either cannot be grown here due to the climate or would be very expensive to grow, so it is naturally imported and because of that it drive up the costs hence why it is expensive to purchase.
ReplyDeleteHi Joy. I absolutely agree with you on the love of banana milk, but unfortunately we didn't get to try it in korea so I can only imagine. I was surprised that I liked the soy milk specifically the black soy milk and I had a good amount of them because some of my fellow scouts weren't big fans of milk in general. I really wish you could have tried that kiwi juice, I know you would've loved it. Hopefully if we get the opportunity to revisit, you'll get to try it.
ReplyDeleteHere’s hoping we both get the chance to revisit and explore even more delicious treats 🫶
DeleteCheers to that Joy and congrats on being selected as one of the GG Ambassadors, maybe we'll see each other sooner than we thought
ReplyDeleteI hope so too, Randy! I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for you 😊.
DeleteHi Kellen. So sorry for the late reply, it was lost between a previous chat. Guyana does have many traditional dishes because we are made up of 6 races, which means we get to enjoy foods from all across the world all year long. Some of my favorite traditional dishes are:
ReplyDelete1. pepperpot which is an Amerindian dish that is mostly used during the Christmas holiday and September when we celebrate our indigenous people all month long
2. Roti and curry, but mostly the Roti because that can be eaten with absolutely anything. This is an Indian dish that is eaten all year long with various dishes
3. Metemgee which is an African dish that is made of coconut milk, provisions and many more. In my home we normally prepare salted dish to go along with it so that's how I prefer it.
What are the traditional dishes of Rwanda and what's your favorite?
Salted fish. I now see the typo, my bad
DeleteIn Rwanda, we’ve too many traditional food such as sweet potatoes . Umutsima (a dish of cassava and corn), isombe (cassava leaves with Eggplant and spinach) and mizuzu (fried plantains). And the one i prefer most in traditional food is sweet potatoes with fried beans&isombe with umutsima.it’s so great,I hope you can get to try it cause it tastes cool😜
DeleteHi Kellen. I hope I can get to try them as well. Now when it comes to sweet potatoes, I don't really enjoy the ones from my country but I enjoy the American ones. That logic doesn't make sense to me either because I know it's the same thing but the it tastes completely different
ReplyDeleteOoooh so distinguised, you can try cause it may tastes different from yours. What’s your favourite hobby?
DeleteHi Kellen. I love to travel and trying different foods. What about you.
ReplyDeleteListening to music, watching movie& travelling around sometimes
DeleteHi Kellen. What is your most memorable experience from the jamboree?
ReplyDeleteHi! The most memorable time was when we visited Gyeongbok royal palace, lotte world adventure&healing village due to different activities .How about you?
DeleteI would say my favorite thing was pizza making a Imsil Cheese villagw and a shooting range we visited with the Portuguese scouts and a hike we took a the jamboree
ReplyDeleteHi Randy, my name is Jill and I’m from Suriname. I also attended the wsj23 and I’m really interested in what the scouts of the country that is next to mine experienced. Do you maybe want to connect trough social media
ReplyDeleteHi Jill. Sorry for the late reply. If you like you can message me on Instagram. My account is typically._.a._.weirdo. looking forward to hearing from you
