Daejeon has three major rivers: the Gapcheon, Yudeungcheon, and Daejeoncheon. These rivers are connected to the Geum River watershed and serve as habitats for various living organisms as well as recreational spaces for citizens. However, in recent years, water pollution has become a growing concern as household waste, domestic wastewater, pollutants washed off roads, and soil from construction sites have continuously flowed into these rivers.
O: 환경 영향 관찰
1. Pollutant Inflow Due to Urbanization:
- Because there are many roads and buildings, dust, oil, and microplastics are washed into rivers along with rainwater.
2. Increase in Heavy Rainfall Caused by Climate Change
-Heavy rainfall causes litter and soil to be washed into rivers, leading to increased pollution.
3. Human Activities and Development Projects
-Soil runoff from construction sites, household wastewater, and litter left by river visitors continuously enter rivers and worsen water quality.

Implementation of the Citizen Participation “PAKS Campaign for Cleaning Daejeon’s Three Rivers”
PAKS stands for Pick, Act, Keep, and Save.
Pick: Collect litter and waste around the rivers.
Act: Actively participate in environmental protection activities.
Keep: Maintain a clean and healthy river environment on a continuous basis.
Save: Preserve nature and ecosystems for future generations.
E: 평가 및 근거: 기대 효과와 이를 뒷받침하는 근거
If the PAKS Campaign is implemented, improvements in water quality can be expected through the reduction of litter and pollutants around the rivers. In addition, the habitats of various organisms, such as fish, aquatic insects, and birds, will be improved, helping to conserve biodiversity.
In fact, citizen-led environmental protection activities, such as the clean-up efforts of the Han River in Seoul and river restoration projects carried out across the country, have shown positive effects on river environments and increased environmental awareness among residents. These examples demonstrate that the continuous participation of local citizens can be an effective way to address environmental problems.
