COP30 in Brasil: Towards Sustainability in the Amazon
(Belém, Pará - November 2025)
by GG Ambassador Alice Fiejo* (Brazil)
What is the COP?
The Conference of the Parties (COP) is the
supreme decision-making body of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change
(UNFCCC), gathering 198 signatory countries. It is the main international forum
for annual climate negotiations.
The primary goal would be to stabilize greenhouse gas (GHG) concentrations in the atmosphere to prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system. It assesses progress on environmental policies and debates new commitments.

Let's back to the COP 30 in Brazil ... I will introduce briefly as a GG Ambassador.
Brasil as the host country
For the first time, the event is taking place in an Amazonian city, Belém do Pará. Brasil, as the host country, aims to reassert its leadership and demonstrate solutions in bioeconomy, renewable energy, and forest preservation.
The location highlights the vital importance
of tropical forests for global climate stability and the urgency of protecting
the Amazon.
Objectives and main topics
- Accelerating the implementation of the
Paris Agreement, focusing on limiting global warming to 1.5°C.
- Submission of new, more ambitious
Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) by countries for 2035.
- Mobilizing climate finance for developing
nations, a primary bottleneck in negotiations.
- Highlight themes: Just energy transition,
sustainable agriculture, biodiversity and forest preservation, and climate
adaptation.
INFORMATION FROM THE BRAZILIAN GOVERNMENT

Local impact
Infrastructure: R$ 4.7 billion in investments for urban mobility, sanitation, and hotel upgrades in Belém.
Environment: Significant improvements in drainage to prevent flooding and preservation of forest areas within the new City Park.
Economy: Stimulation of the local
bioeconomy and tourism, with a focus on sustainable products and family
farming.
Visibility: A unique opportunity to place the Amazon at the center of the global debate and attract green economy investments.
Expectations and challenges that are being faced
COP30 in Brazil represents a decisive
moment in the fight against the global climate crisis. The world expects Belém
to drive a decade of implementation and delivery of real, just solutions. The
conference's success hinges on consensus and the ambition of countries to
protect the planet and ensure a sustainable future.
Indigenous leader and writer Ailton Krenak
has been a prominent critic of the COP30, arguing that the conference risks
becoming a "business fair" to negotiate "petroleum, wood, and
rare earths" rather than a space for meaningful climate action. He announced
he would not participate to avoid associating his name with an event
"sequestered by the economic perspective"

Hello world!
This is Alice from Brazil, and I'm in South Korea right now!
I arrived here last Thursday, and I will go back to Brazil on next Sunday.
So this is my diary of Korea!
FIRST DAY: I arrived from a very long flight that passed by Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Ethiopia and finally, South Korea. The airport is in Incheon, so I had to go to Seoul by bus.
SECOND DAY: I started the day eating a very tasty food called sogeumppan (bread with salt). After that, I went to Insadong to see Miffy’s 70th birthday exposition! It was very very cute and interactive, so everyone from different ages can have fun at this cute exhibition! After walking for a while, I saw the Gwanghwamun Gate, and the man in it is the same guy that is on the 100₩ coin, it was really surprising!
After that, I went to YP BookStore and had a drink that looked like a sky with clouds, it looked so beautiful and mystic!
THIRD DAY: First thing I ate on my third day around South Korea was the best food EVER: kimbap. The cooks were also very kind, so it made it taste even better. After working for the project in a room in Hongdae, I went to Animate store. There they sell a lot of anime stuff, and it was very very full! Since it was too crowded, I went to a very different place: a sheep café! They have real sheeps that are very cute and well behaved, and the food is really awesome. After leaving the cafe, I walked in Hongdae streets and found loads of different toys, stores, clothes and stylish people. I visited Olive Young, a very famous makeup store in Asia and bought some makeup (for the first time) for myself! To finish the day, I bought silly stickers at a store called ‘Made By’, went shopping at Daiso and hopped on the bus to go home.

Orgulho da dinda! Arrasa sempre! ❤️
