Seeds of Hope Idea
Green
Sports Spaces Kampala Project
H
– Home Region
Kampala, Uganda, especially many community sports
grounds and school playgrounds, face challenges of poor waste disposal, plastic
pollution, lack of trees, and dusty playing environments. In many urban areas
and slum communities, sports fields are surrounded by littered plastic bottles
and polythene bags, while there are very few shaded or green areas for young
people.
O
– Observation & Objective
Sports is one of the biggest tools that brings young
people together in Uganda. However, many sports spaces are not environmentally
friendly. Plastic waste after matches and training sessions is common, and many
grounds become excessively hot because there are few trees around them. Through
observation, I noticed that young people gather daily at football, basketball,
and rugby grounds, making these spaces ideal centres for environmental
awareness and action.
The
objective of this project is to:
- Promote environmental
responsibility through sports.
- Reduce plastic waste around
community sports grounds.
- Encourage tree planting and
greener sports environments.
- Inspire young athletes to
become environmental ambassadors.
P
– Plan
The “Green Sports Spaces Kampala” initiative will:
· Organize
monthly clean-up activities around community sports grounds.
· Place
labelled plastic collection points at selected fields.
· Encourage
athletes and students to bring reusable water bottles instead of disposable
plastics.
· Plant
trees around playgrounds and sports grounds to create shade and improve air
quality.
· Use
sports events to educate youth about environmental protection.
· Launch
a simple challenge called: “Play Clean, Keep Green.”
Young
people can participate by:
- Collecting plastic waste
after games.
- Planting and caring for
trees.
- Sharing eco-actions on
social media.
- Encouraging teammates to protect the environment.
E
– Execute & Example
The project can begin with one pilot clean up and
tree-planting activity at a community sports ground or university playground in
Kampala.
Execution
examples:
- Partner with student
volunteers, sports clubs, and local youth leaders.
- Conduct a clean-up before or
after a sports event.
- Plant a few trees around the
sports area.
- Share before-and-after
photos on social media.
- Create short awareness
videos featuring athletes encouraging environmental responsibility.
Expected
impact:
- Cleaner sports environments.
- Increased environmental
awareness among youth.
- Reduced plastic waste in
community spaces.
- Stronger connection between
sports and sustainability in Uganda.

I really liked how you connected the environmental problems you observed around sports grounds in Kampala with a practical solution. The problems, such as plastic waste and the lack of trees, were clearly explained, and the clean-up and tree-planting activities seem realistic for young people to participate in. I also liked that you suggested sharing before-and-after photos, because they can clearly show the results of the project. I hope your idea helps create cleaner and greener sports spaces in Kampala! 🌳⚽

ReplyDelete* Clear & Important Problem (Good): Clearly identifies localized environmental issues across community sports fields in Kampala—specifically severe plastic waste littering and extreme heat caused by a lack of trees and shade.
* Feasibility of Solution (Good): Highly practical and student-led. Focuses on low-barrier, actionable steps (monthly clean-ups, designated plastic bins, pilot tree-planting events) partnered with local sports clubs without relying on heavy government funding.
* Sustainability of Solution (Good): Ensures long-term impact by planting trees to improve air quality and shade, while cultivating lasting eco-habits among youth by designating athletes as environmental ambassadors through the "Play Clean, Keep Green" campaign.
* Clarity & Persuasiveness of Plan (Good): Features a clean, logical structure (H-O-P-E) with concrete execution steps, including social media before-and-after campaigns and video awareness to build community momentum.
I chose this idea because it addresses real environmental problems in Kampala's sports spaces, such as plastic waste, a lack of trees, and dusty playing areas. The proposed solutions, including monthly clean-up activities, plastic collection points, tree planting, and reusable water bottles, are practical and relatively easy to start. The project could help create cleaner and healthier sports spaces while also encouraging young people to take responsibility for the environment. Since the activities can be repeated regularly and young athletes can continue participating, I think this idea could create positive and sustainable changes in the community.
ReplyDeleteIt specifically presents the characteristics of the region and the problems that arose from those characteristics. I think this post specifically investigated the unsolved issues. I think problem-sloving is feasible, and I think it's a good idea for teenagers to cultivate the places they use through campaigns. I evaluated that the campaign would be highly effective not only by simply solving visible problems but also by making users aware of them.
