GINUE Friend : Yeonhui from Yeosu to Africa

Hello, my name is Kim Yeonhui.

I was born and raised in Yeosu, a city in the southern part of Korea, and I am currently living in Incheon for university.

During the winter break of my first year in college, I spent two weeks in Uganda, Africa. I had the opportunity to teach students at a local school and organize a sports festival with them. Having grown up in a relatively small city like Yeosu, I initially found the culture and environment of Uganda unfamiliar. However, as I laughed, played, and shared meaningful moments with the children, I began to feel that we were becoming closer beyond differences in language and surroundings.

I still vividly remember running across the playground with them. That experience greatly influenced the direction of my life. After earning my teaching certification in Korea, I hope to return to Africa one day and spend part of my life teaching and growing alongside students there.

Through learning and sharing, I aspire to become a teacher who connects with a wider world.

저는 한국 남쪽의 도시 여수에서 태어나고 자랐으며, 현재는 대학 진학으로 인천에서 생활하고 있습니다.

대학교 1학년 겨울방학 동안 2주간 아프리카 우간다를 다녀왔습니다. 현지 학교에서 아이들을 가르치고, 함께 체육대회를 준비하며 소중한 시간을 보냈습니다. 평생을 여수라는 비교적 작은 도시에서 자라온 저에게 우간다의 문화와 환경은 처음에는 낯설게 느껴졌습니다. 하지만 아이들과 웃고 뛰놀며 마음을 나누는 과정 속에서 언어와 환경의 차이를 넘어 서로가 점점 가까워지고 있다는 것을 느낄 수 있었습니다.

지금도 아이들과 함께 운동장을 달리던 순간들이 생생하게 떠오릅니다. 그 경험은 제 삶의 방향에 큰 영향을 주었습니다. 한국에서 교사 자격증을 취득한 뒤, 언젠가는 다시 아프리카로 돌아가 그곳의 학교에서 아이들과 함께 배우고 성장하는 시간을 보내고 싶다는 꿈을 갖게 되었습니다.

앞으로도 배움과 나눔을 통해 더 넓은 세상과 연결되는 교사가 되고 싶습니다.

As I mentioned earlier, my hometown is Yeosu, a beautiful city in South Korea made famous by the popular song "Yeosu Night Sea." Among many spots in the city, my absolute favorite is the "Soho-dong Dongdong Bridge" near my house.

As you can see in the photos, this place has a completely different vibe depending on the time of day. During the day, you can feel energized by the refreshing ocean view sparkling under the sun. At night, it transforms into a romantic setting with stunning illuminations reflecting off the water. I personally love taking a peaceful walk there during the day or going for a run against the backdrop of the beautiful night scenery.

If you ever visit Yeosu, I highly recommend checking out Soho-dong Dongdong Bridge! There are plenty of great seafood restaurants nearby, so it’s the perfect place to wrap up your day with a delicious dinner. I’ve attached the map below—don’t miss out!

앞서 소개해 드렸듯, 제 고향은 '여수 밤바다'라는 노래로 잘 알려진 대한민국의 아름다운 항구도시 여수입니다. 여수에는 매력적인 곳이 많지만, 제가 가장 아끼는 장소는 집 근처에 있는 '소호동 동동다리'예요.

이곳은 사진에서 보시는 것처럼 낮과 밤의 매력이 전혀 다릅니다. 낮에는 햇살 아래 펼쳐진 시원한 바다 풍경을 보며 활기찬 에너지를 얻을 수 있고, 저녁에는 은은한 조명과 야경이 어우러진 낭만적인 밤바다를 만끽할 수 있답니다. 저는 주로 낮에 이곳에서 산책을 즐기거나, 밤에는 아름다운 야경을 배경 삼아 러닝을 하곤 합니다.
