Connectography Speech for World Environment Day 2025 | Kim Taehwan (Democratic Republic of Congo) | 018
Mount Nyiragongo is a stratovolcano located on the border of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda in Africa, and has the world's largest lava lake. It is the most active volcano in Africa. The most recent eruption was in 2021, and this volcano also has a caldera formed by the collapse of the basin surrounding it, and there are tremors and lava flows inside the caldera, making the inside of the caldera look red. The lava of this volcano is highly fluid and has low viscosity.
"Do people in your area have any special ways of preparing for or dealing with volcanic activity from Mount Nyiragongo?"
I'm curious about the daily lives of people in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Can I ask for photos showing local markets or village scenes?
Hello! I’m Kim Taehwan from Korea. It’s spring here now. The sun is warm, flowers are blooming, and the streets are filled with beautiful colors. But it's still chilly in the mornings and evenings, so a light jacket is a must.
Korea has also been increasingly affected by climate change in recent years. Fine dust has become more severe in the spring, and heavy rain and heat waves have become more frequent in the summer. Natural disasters are becoming more frequent. In addition, summers and winters have become longer and springs and autumns have become shorter, so it was very cold until recently.
What role can the international community play in supporting the implementation of environmental policies in the Democratic Republic of the Congo?
The world is currently in a situation where it is necessary to reduce greenhouse gases together. What do you think about this from the perspective of developing countries?
