Connectography Speech for World Environment Day 2025 | Yoon Ji Hoo (Philippines) | 021
Chocolate Hills is a unique natural feature located on Vauxhall Island in the Philippines, and it is impressive to see about 1,200 conical hills spread out on the plain. These hills are a type of karst terrain formed by limestone through chemical weathering and erosion over the years, and they are generally 30-50 m high. During the dry season, the grass on the hill turned brown and looked chocolate-like, giving it the name "Chocolate Hill." The area is loved by many for its mysterious legends and beautiful landscapes, as it is considered one of the Philippines' leading natural attractions and a topographical heritages.
Why are chocolate hills considered topographically high in the Philippines?
What are some legendary stories about chocolate hills?
Is there another karst landscape that appears in the Philippines other than Chocolate Hill? If there is, please introduce it with a picture.
Korea has a temperate seasonal climate with four distinct seasons, which shows a wide variety of climatic characteristics from season to season. Currently, it is springtime, and the temperature gradually rises as the cold air in winter recedes and warm air flows in from the south. Spring usually runs from March to May, during which time there is a large daily temperature difference and generally sunny and dry weather. However, air quality can become temporarily poor due to the influence of yellow dust and fine dust, and the weather can change suddenly due to changes in air pressure.
In addition, Korea has a climate that is greatly affected by seasonal winds, and the characteristics of an oceanic climate are strong in summer and a continental climate in winter. These climatic characteristics have various effects on agriculture, ecosystems, and daily life, and have contributed greatly to the formation of cultures and traditions centered on the four seasons.
However, in recent years, the traditional seasonal division has become increasingly ambiguous due to climate change. Summer is getting longer and the number of days of heat waves increases, and local heavy rain and typhoon damage are also intensifying. Cold waves and heavy snow alternate in winter, and spring and fall are getting shorter. In addition, fine dust and yellow dust problems lead to poor air quality, adversely affecting health. This is also closely related to industrialization, the increase of greenhouse gases, and urban heat islands, so efforts to adapt to the climate and reduce carbon are urgently needed.
The Philippines is a country that is very vulnerable to climate change, promoting sustainable development through various environmental policies. Representative policies include the Climate Change Response Act enacted in 2009, which establishes the National Climate Change Committee and establishes regional climate change adaptation strategies. The *Clean Air Act (1999) aims to improve air quality by regulating emissions from industries and vehicles, and the *Ecological Solid Waste Management Act (2000) strengthens local government-led waste separation and recycling systems. In addition, the National Greening Program is being implemented to restore forests and increase carbon absorption, and the Renewable Energy Act (2008) includes tax cuts and investment attraction systems to encourage the development of eco-friendly energy such as solar and wind power. In addition, a national environmental awareness program that strengthens environmental education is being implemented. However, the implementation power of policies and regional gaps remain important tasks.
Among them, I did further research on the Clean Air Act. The Clean Air Act of 1999 is a comprehensive environmental law enacted to solve air pollution problems in the Philippines, which establishes regulatory and supervisory systems at the national level to improve air quality. The law regulates emissions from various pollutant sources, including industries, vehicles, and fuel use, and clearly sets standards for pollutant emission. It also encourages the eco-friendly transition of public transportation and includes expanding the use of renewable energy. Local governments should establish regional air quality management plans, and the government operates a nationwide air quality monitoring system to monitor air conditions in real time. It is also contributing to the improvement of citizenship by conducting education and public relations activities in parallel. However, during the implementation process, problems such as lack of administrative capacity and budget limitations are sometimes pointed out.
Also, I have a question about this. I heard that the air quality detection system under the Clean Air Act will be operated nationwide, but I wonder how the air quality detection system works.
Hi, my name is Yoon Ji hoo. I am 18 years old and I am from Korea. In Korea, I live on Yeongjongdo Island. I came to Yeongjongdo Island at the age of 5 and have lived there until now. Yeongjongdo Island has beautiful scenery because it has both mountains and the sea. These days, I spend most of my time at a dormitory school called Haneul Academy. At school, I do various activities such as studying and club activities. I am very interested in basketball. I often watch basketball games and play basketball with my friends. Recently, I learned about world geography and became curious about various countries. So I want to learn about your lives through this activity. See you again!
