GEO RENAISSANCE 2026 Successfully Concludes
GEO RENAISSANCE 2026 was successfully held on June 5, 2026, at Seoul National University in celebration of World Environment Day.
One of the most memorable highlights of the event was the reading of the GEO RENAISSANCE Declaration by five students from Handong Global University. The students were members of the Chokepoint Team, selected through the “Geographer’s Table” curation competition, and prospective applicants to the GG Academy.
Together, they delivered a declaration calling for the restoration of geographical literacy and a renewed commitment to understanding and connecting our world.
GEO RENAISSANCE 2026 Declaration

On June 5, 2026, World Environment Day, we gathered at Seoul National University.
Humanity is living through an era of profound transformation marked by climate change, biodiversity loss, geopolitical conflicts, energy transition, artificial intelligence, and human migration. These challenges are not confined to any single nation or region; they are shared issues emerging within an interconnected world.
In such a time, we affirm that the ability to understand the world spatially and to connect people and nature, local communities and the global community—in other words, Geographical Literacy—is becoming more important than ever.
Geography is not merely the study of place names. It is a foundational discipline that helps us understand the relationship between people and the environment, connect regions and societies, and design a sustainable future. It is also a public language through which we learn to understand diverse cultures and civilizations while seeking paths toward cooperation and coexistence.
Therefore, we hereby declare:
First, we will strive to restore and expand geographical literacy in order to deepen our understanding of the world and strengthen global connections.
Second, we will approach environmental and climate challenges through a spatial perspective and put this understanding into practice for the coexistence of humanity and nature.
Third, we will respect diverse cultures and regions across borders and generations and promote global solidarity as responsible world citizens.
Fourth, we will realize the public value of geography through education, research, media, culture, industry, and policymaking.
Fifth, we will broaden opportunities for learning and exchange so that future generations may better understand the world and shape the future.
We hope that today’s declaration will not remain merely a statement of intent.
Instead, we hope it becomes the starting point for meaningful action toward a better future.
Together, we embark on a new journey—one that seeks to read the world anew and reconnect humanity with the environment.
Therefore, we collectively proclaim:
“We declare that we will read the world again,
reconnect humanity and the environment,
and restore geographical literacy for future generations.”

지리학 르네상스 선언문 (한동대 학생 5인 낭독)
2026년 6월 5일, 세계 환경의 날을 맞아 우리는 서울대학교에 모였다.
오늘날
인류는 기후위기, 생물다양성 감소, 국제 갈등, 에너지 전환, 인공지능 혁명, 인구
이동과 같은 거대한 전환의 시대를 살아가고 있다. 이러한 변화는 특정 국가나 지역만의 문제가 아니라
서로 연결된 하나의 세계 속에서 나타나는 공동의 과제이다.
우리는
이러한 시대일수록 세계를 공간적으로 이해하고, 인간과 자연, 지역과
세계를 연결하여 사고하는 힘, 곧 지리적 문해력(Geographic
Literacy)이 더욱 중요해지고 있음을 확인한다.
지리학은
단순히 지명을 외우는 학문이 아니다. 지리학은 인간과 환경의 관계를 이해하고, 지역과 세계를 연결하며, 지속가능한 미래를 설계하는 기초 학문이다. 또한 서로 다른 문화와 문명을 이해하고, 협력과 공존의 길을 모색하는
공공의 언어이다.
우리는
오늘 이 자리에서 다음과 같이 선언한다.
하나, 우리는 세계를 더 깊이 이해하고 연결하기 위해 지리적 문해력의 회복과 확산에 힘쓴다. (한동대 학생1)

우리는
오늘의 선언이 단순한 다짐에 머물지 않기를 바란다.
이 선언이
더 나은 미래를 향한 실천의 출발점이 되기를 바라며, 세계를 다시 읽고 인간과 환경을 다시 연결하는
새로운 여정을 함께 시작하고자 한다.
이에 우리는 다음과 같이 선언한다.
“우리는 세계를 다시 읽고,
인간과 환경을 다시 연결하며,
다음 세대를 위한 지리적 문해력을 회복할 것을 선언한다.”
