H – Home (Environmental Issue in My Region)
Cambodia, especially Kampot where I grew up, faces a serious plastic waste problem. Single-use plastic bags and bottles are scattered everywhere — on the streets, along the riverbanks, and in the markets. Because there is no proper recycling system, most of the waste is either left in nature or burned in the open.
O – Overview (Root Causes)
There are three main causes behind this problem. First, the absence of a public waste management system means many areas have no garbage collection service. Second, the lack of environmental education leaves many residents unaware of how plastic harms the environment. Third, the culture of using cheap, single-use products is deeply rooted in daily life.
P – Plan (My Own Solution)
I propose a “School-Based Environmental Education + Local Reuse Campaign.” When children learn about the environment, that change spreads into their families. In addition, I want to provide market vendors with reusable cloth bags as a sustainable alternative to plastic bags.
E – Execution (Real-Life Application)
I would like to start by partnering with my alma mater, Salt and Light International School, to host an environmental camp during school vacation. Starting small and spreading the message through social media, I believe that one small seed can grow into a nationwide change across Cambodia.
