This year’s GG Summer School(2025.07.21.~2025.07.23.) takes place at Schofield Hall, Seoul National University, a meaningful venue named after Dr. Frank William Schofield, a Canadian who played a key role in Korea’s independence movement. On Wednesday, July 23, a representative from the Embassy of Canada in Korea will join us for a special lunch talk to celebrate the friendship between Canada and Korea through his remarkable story.
Dr. Schofield, born in Warwickshire, England and a naturalized Canadian, is remembered as the “34th National Representative” of Korea for his international efforts during the March 1st Independence Movement. A veterinary doctor and medical missionary, he came to Korea in 1916, taught at Severance Medical School, and supported Korea’s independence with courage and compassion.
After being deported by Japanese authorities, he returned to Korea in 1958 and continued to educate and serve until his passing in 1970. He was later buried with honor at the Seoul National Cemetery—the first foreign national to be laid to rest there.
Dr. Schofield is also known for his love of tigers, often highlighting their brave and fierce spirit as a symbol of the Korean people. Today, his legacy lives on through the Schofield Memorial Foundation and ongoing Canada–Korea cooperation.
Don’t miss this chance to learn about a true friend of Korea—and a bridge between two nations.
