🌋 Arenal Volcano (Volcán Arenal)
Location: Located in the northwestern region of Costa Rica, in Alajuela Province.
Type: Stratovolcano – it has a smooth, symmetrical cone shape and is often considered an “ideal volcano” in form.
Elevation: Approximately 1,670 meters above sea level.
Volcanic Activity:
A major eruption occurred in 1968, after which the volcano remained highly active for decades.
Although it has been relatively quiet since 2010, it is still classified as an active volcano.
Geothermal activity continues beneath the surface, making the surrounding area rich in hot springs and geothermal energy resources.
How does the volcanic activity of Arenal affect the biodiversity in the surrounding national park?
관광지로도 매우 인기가 있고 카약, 낚시, 윈드서핑, 보트 투어 등 레저 활동 활발
🏞 Lake Arenal (Lago Arenal)
The largest lake in Costa Rica, covering an area of about 85 km².
Originally a natural lake, it was expanded in 1979 for the construction of a hydroelectric power plant, and is now classified as an artificial reservoir.
Hydroelectric Importance:
Lake Arenal generates around 10–12% of Costa Rica’s electricity, making it a key example of sustainable energy development.
Tourism:
The lake is a popular destination for recreational activities such as kayaking, fishing, windsurfing, and boat tours.
The scenic views of both the lake and Arenal Volcano together are especially breathtaking and attract many visitors.
How important is Lake Arenal for Costa Rica's energy independence? Do people talk about it often?
Is the PES system still active today? If anyone in your family or people around you has used the program, how did you participate?
I understand that Costa Rica is highly dependent on fossil fuel imports, but in what direction is the decarbonization policy in transportation and transportation going?
In what areas and in what ways do 'blue carbon' projects related to the conservation of marine ecosystems actually work?
