Connectography Speech for World Environment Day 2025 | Seo JI yu (Sierra Leone) | 098
1. Sierra Leone's Unique Landforms
Sierra Leone's unique terrain includes Mount Lion, which is located close to Freetown. As the name of Sierra Leone is derived from the mountain Lion, it is a representative terrain of Sierra Leone, characterized by its enormous height and steep cliffs, and unique in that it rises directly from the coast. In addition, the area of the Roro River, Sierra Leone's largest river, is subject to intermittent flooding, such as around rivers such as the Nile and Colorado Rivers, which were learned in class. Sierra Leone has a huge amount of precipitation during the rainy season, so the area around the Roro River overflows into a huge swamp. Hippos, elephants, and rare birds gather in the Roro River during the rainy season, and people live on the water. And it is said that Sierra Leone has recently discovered a limestone cave called the Yalunka Caves, which is believed to have crystal veins, groundwater pools, and bat communities. However, it is a hidden geological gem of Sierra Leone, which has infinite potential in the future as it has been discovered so far.
Q) Can you really see the face of a lion like that on Lion Mountain? Who made that shape and when? What does the Roro River look like and how does it live during the dry season?
2. Picture Request
I want to get a picture of the lion-shaped place located in Lion Mountain(Like the picture I inserted)! I also want to see various animals living around the Roro River(Rokel River).
Spring is coming in Korea these days. The temperature is rising rapidly. Cherry blossoms and magnolias are in full bloom around my home. But Yeongjong Island, where my school is located, is an island, so the weather is still chilly. Some of my friends are still wearing long padded jackets! Cherry blossoms are not even in full bloom. But I expect them to be in full bloom maybe next week. It's raining this weekend in Korea. I like the rain in spring. It makes me feel really good to smell the grass of spring and hear the rain falling on the petals. How is the weather in your country today?
Nowadays, the earth seems to be suffering from environmental problems worldwide. The use of fossil fuels is increasing, arable land is destroyed, global warming is becoming more severe, resulting in a rise in sea levels and a reduction in glacial area. In Korea, we can feel this global warming deeply in that the cherry blossom season is getting faster and the North Korean people of crops are moving north. According to the news, I think plastic pollution is the most urgent environmental problem in Korea. Due to industrial development and the rapid increase in plastic consumption, the global sphere is suffering from plastic waste. I think the plastic pollution problem must be solved as soon as possible because plastic that takes 500 years to decompose causes fatal damage to both people and animals when burned. I think it is important to recycle without overconsumption in order to solve plastic pollution. In the future, I will try to use recycling products mainly for recycling and upcycling products and consume only essential items! What else can we do to solve environmental problems?
Sierra Leone is a country of "nature" with beautiful beaches and lush rainforests, so I think the damage will be greater if the environment is destroyed. I heard that Sierra Leone's government is also working on various sustainability and eco-friendly policies such as international partnerships and NGO agreements. Among Sierra Leone's various environmental policies, the policy on "coast and marine protection" caught my eye. This is because I have talked with my friends on WhatsApp that there are many beautiful beaches in Sierra Leone. Sierra Leone is working with international organizations to establish MPA (Marine Protection Area) to protect marine biodiversity! I really hope that Sierra Leone's oceans are preserved and its beauty will not be lost continuously. Here, I wonder how many beaches in Sierra Leone are designated as marine protected areas and what are the criteria for selecting them!
