Connectography Speech for World Environment Day 2025 | Choi YeonSoo (Zambia) | 127
Victoria Falls is one of the largest waterfalls in the world, measuring 1.7 km wide and about 108 m high, across the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is known as one of Africa's leading natural wonders. In addition, Victoria Falls is named after Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom by Scottish explorer David Livingston, which is the name used in Zimbabwe.
Q. I heard that this waterfall is called 'Mosi-Oa-Tunya', what is the meaning and origin of the name?
Q. How much does the quantity of Victoria Falls vary with the season, and also how does it change with the rainy season and dry season?
Q. Can you show me the traditional architectural style of Zambia or the general shape of the house?
Q. I wonder how nature is different in Zambia on rainy or sunny days, can you show me?
Hi, let me introduce you to the weather in Korea these days. Korea has begun to enter its full-fledged spring season, and the sun is warm during the day and the temperature is relatively warm, ranging from 15 to 20 degrees Celsius. However, the daily temperature range is large, so it's still chilly in the morning and evening, so I need an outerwear. Since I have to wear a school uniform, I am living lightly with a hoodie and windbreaker. Also, since it is the season when cherry blossoms are in bloom, you can see spring flowers everywhere, and the sky is clear, so it is a good weather for a walk. However, there are days when fine dust levels increase in spring, so people sometimes wear masks when going out. These days, Korea is welcoming a warm spring season, and it is a beautiful season because the sun is warm during the day and there are many flowers. However, the daily temperature difference is very large, and sometimes hot or cold days come suddenly, unlike spring. I also feel that spring has become really shorter than before. These abnormal temperatures are becoming more and more frequent in Korea, and I think it's because of severe climate change. Especially in spring, the fine dust gets worse and the air is often cloudy even on a clear day, so many people feel the importance of environmental protection more desperately.
Zambia is located in inland Africa, so the dry season and rainy season are clear. What season is it now? Also, I wonder if there is an abnormal climate like Korea, such as whether precipitation has decreased or the temperature has increased. Climate change is a problem that the world is interested in, so I want to talk about the reality of each country and how to solve it together.
Zambia's environmental policy is composed around four main areas: responding to climate change, protecting forests and biodiversity, water resource management, and waste treatment. First, in order to cope with climate change, 「Climate Change Policy (2016)」 and 「Climate Change Response Strategy (2010)」 are established, and climate resilience, low-carbon economic transformation, and renewable energy expansion are being promoted. In the case of forest resources, through the REDD+ program, reckless logging is suppressed, sustainable forest use is encouraged, and national strategies for conservation of biodiversity are also in place. In addition, based on the principle of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM), water resource management policies are also being implemented to respond to drought and floods and to ensure drinking water safety. Finally, in order to cope with waste problems and pollution caused by urbanization, waste recycling and environmental impact assessment systems are introduced, and pollution is regulated through the Environmental Management Act.
Q. Is Zambia's waste treatment policy aimed at solving any problems caused by urbanization? Also, I wonder how the waste is treated.
Q. I wonder what kind of environmental problems the REDD+ program is meant to solve in Zambia and how it is done specifically.
