Connectography Speech for World Environment Day 2025 | Kim Jeonghun (Nepal) | 106
-Lesser Himalaya (Mahabharat Range)
The Mahabharat Range, part of the Himalayas, traverses central Nepal from east to west, ranging between 1,500m and 3,000m in elevation. It features steep slopes on the southern side and gentle slopes on the northern side. This mountain range is central to Nepal’s mid-mountain region (the orange section in the image above), accounting for approximately 64% of the country’s total land area. To the north of the Mahabharat Range lies the Kathmandu Valley, a high-altitude basin situated approximately 1,400m above sea level, where the capital city Kathmandu and several major cities are located. The valley is well-developed agriculturally and urbanly due to its fertile soil and abundant water resources, serving as the political, economic, and cultural center of Nepal.
2. Question
Why is the soil in the Kathmandu Valley fertile, and what type of climate is found there?
3. Photo Request
I'd like to request a photo showing the Himalayan Mountains visible from the downtown area of Kathmandu, the capital city.
Spring is coming to Korea these days. This year, it was quite cold even in late March, as it snowed. Especially on Yeongjongdo, where my school is located, the temperature doesn't rise easily because it's an island, so it's still quite chilly. But recently, flowers have started to bloom at school, and the weather is gradually getting warmer.
There has been analysis suggesting that the recent large wildfires in Korea were caused by rising temperatures and dry conditions due to climate change. This makes me realize how serious climate change is, as it leads to natural disasters and various environmental issues that we can feel in our daily lives.
Nepal, as a country undergoing industrialization and urbanization, also seems to be facing environmental problems. From my research, I found that water scarcity and water pollution are particularly severe. In cities like Kathmandu, there is a lack of proper water supply infrastructure, so people often rely on rivers and spring water. However, these sources are frequently contaminated due to the inflow of polluted water, causing serious pollution issues.
To address this, the city of Dhulikhel in Nepal is introducing smart water management technologies to manage its water supply system more systematically.
What do you think about the policy of introducing smart technologies in a situation where basic water infrastructure is still lacking?
