Connectography Speech for World Environment Day 2025 | Lee Tae Hwan (Uruguay) | 089
Uruguay's unique terrain is known as the Pampas. The Pampas is one of South America's representative natural terrains, and is a vast grassland plain that stretches across Uruguay, Argentina, and southern Brazil. I learned that it mainly covers central Argentina, all of Uruguay, and some parts of southern Brazil. After further research, I found out that the etymology comes from the Quechua word "pampa," which means grassland. This word was absorbed by Portugal and became Portuguese, and then spread to Spain and became "pampas" in Spanish. So, Brazil, which still uses Portuguese, calls it "pampa." And I know it's flat or gentle, so I wonder what kind of different scenery it has compared to our country, which has many mountains. If possible, I would appreciate it if you could send me some pictures you took. It's also famous for being very fertile land, so I wonder how much influence this has on the Uruguayan economy. Lastly, I wonder how satisfied you are with the weather there. The climate in our country has gotten too hot or cold lately, so it's hard.
In the past, spring didn't have this much yellow dust and fine dust, and it wasn't this short. However, due to excessive factory operation, yellow dust and fine dust have been carried by the wind, and global warming is getting worse, so the distinction between the four seasons is becoming blurred. How has the weather changed in Uruguay? According to my research, Uruguay originally had a mild temperate climate, and although the four seasons are not distinct, spring and fall are relatively long, and summers and winters are mild. However, in recent years, extreme weather such as summer heat waves, droughts, and heavy rains have been occurring more frequently in Uruguay. Currently, Korea's environmental policy is enacting the 'Basic Act on Carbon Neutrality and Green Growth' with the goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, and is implementing various policies such as expanding renewable energy, distributing electric vehicles, and establishing a resource circulation system. In particular, it is promoting measures such as a seasonal management system and strengthening regulations on industrial emissions to solve air pollution problems such as fine dust. I understand that Uruguay's environmental policy is very exemplary among South American countries. More than 90% of its total electricity is supplied by renewable energy, and the proportion of wind and hydroelectric energy is particularly high. In preparation for climate change, it is also strengthening sustainable agricultural policies, forest protection, and biodiversity conservation policies. Do you feel this kind of eco-friendly renewable energy substitution in your daily life? What are the inconveniences and reactions of the people?
Hello, I’m Lee Taehwan, a student in class 2-4 at Haneul High School. I got to connect with Uruguay through my participation in Connectography. I’ve never been to Uruguay, but I’m interested in the country because my favorite soccer player is from there. and I also love eating. Through this opportunity, I’d like to learn more about Uruguay, including its food, culture, and various other culture.
