Connectography Speech for World Environment Day 2025 | Choi Woo Jin (Austria) | 114
Located in Tragöß, Styria, Austria, Grüner See (literally "Green Lake") is a high-altitude freshwater lake famous for its emerald-green waters. Situated in a karst basin at approximately 776 meters above sea level, it is fed by melting snow from the surrounding mountains. During winter, the area resembles a meadow with shallow water levels of about 1–2 meters. However, in spring, as the snow melts, the water level rises dramatically—reaching up to 12 meters—transforming it into a lake. This seasonal transformation, combined with the lake’s crystal-clear water, once allowed visitors to view submerged walking paths, benches, and bridges. However, since 2016, all water-related activities have been banned to protect the fragile environment.
Spring is arriving in Korea now! The streets and parks are full of blooming flowers. However, it’s still a bit chilly to enjoy outdoor activities comfortably. Cherry blossoms are in full bloom across the country. But due to global warming, they have bloomed a little earlier than usual. It seems like the blooming season has been getting earlier every year. Global warming is becoming more serious. South Korea has enacted various laws to address global warming and respond to the climate crisis. One of the key laws is the Framework Act on Carbon Neutrality and Green Growth for Responding to Climate Crisis, which sets the goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 and includes medium- and long-term targets and climate adaptation measures. Another important law is the Act on Promotion of Technology Development for Climate Change Response, which promotes technological development for climate change mitigation, establishes plans for technology development, and supports specialized personnel and research institutions. The Basic Act on Climate Crisis Response aims to realize a carbon-neutral society by 2050 and outlines sector-specific emission reduction targets and the establishment of a climate crisis response plan. The Partial Amendment to the Government Organization Act changes the Ministry of Environment’s name to 'Ministry of Climate and Environment', specifies its duties related to climate change, and elevates the minister’s position to Deputy Prime Minister to coordinate policies more effectively. Finally, the Act on Climate and Climate Change Observation and Prediction establishes a legal framework for monitoring and predicting climate change, providing necessary information and promoting related research.
Does Austria have any environmental policies in place to respond to global warming?
