One of France’s most unique geographical features is Mont-Saint-Michel.
Mont-Saint-Michel is a small island and town located in the Normandy region in the northwest of France.
The name means "Mount Saint Michael," and the entire island is built like a fortress with a church at its center.
What makes Mont-Saint-Michel such a unique landscape in France is its dramatic tidal range, which can reach up to 14 meters. Because of this, Mont-Saint-Michel becomes an island during high tide and connects to the mainland during low tide.
Also, one of the largest tidal flats in Europe surrounds this island.
At low tide, the wide tidal flats appear, and at high tide, seawater rushes in quickly, turning the area into an island again.
In the past, people could only access the island during low tide, but now a bridge allows visitors to reach it at any time.
At the top of Mont-Saint-Michel stands a Gothic-style abbey, which gives the site great historical and cultural value.
In recognition of its importance, Mont-Saint-Michel was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.
These days, it's full-on spring in Korea. The sun is warm and the weather feels nice during the day, but it's still a bit chilly in the mornings and evenings, so many people bring a light jacket. Flowers are blooming all around, making it a great season for a walk. Especially, cherry blossoms are in full bloom, and many people go out to enjoy them. However, these days, we sometimes get really warm days even in spring, and flowers bloom much earlier than usual. I think this is because of climate change. The weather is getting harder to predict, and it feels different from how it used to be. I know that France is putting in a lot of effort to protect the environment. I've heard that you're increasing the use of renewable energy and working to reduce plastic waste. In particular, the plan to completely ban single-use plastic packaging by 2040 is really impressive.
I'm curious—what kinds of activities do students in France do to help protect the environment?
