Irken Aktoprak is an Azerbaijani geographer and educator affiliated with the Department of Physical Geography at Baku State University. Her academic interests span physical geography, landscape studies, environmental change, and geography education.
Her research has focused particularly on the dynamics and transformation of natural landscapes in Azerbaijan, including the Greater Caucasus and the Caspian coastal region. She has examined the causes and consequences of landscape change, the boundaries and interactions between different landscape systems, and the growing influence of human activities on natural environments. More recently, she has contributed to research using satellite imagery to investigate anthropogenic transformations of landscapes in the Greater Caucasus.
Alongside her work in physical geography, Aktoprak has been deeply engaged in geographical education and educational reform in Azerbaijan. She has participated in national education reform projects and has worked on innovative approaches to geography teaching, interdisciplinary curricula, and the development of critical thinking through geographical education.
She is also a co-author of geography textbooks and teaching materials used in Azerbaijani schools, demonstrating an important connection between academic geography and geography education for younger generations.
Her international experience includes educational and academic programs in the United States, Israel, France, Russia, Romania, Lithuania, Moldova, and other countries. She has also participated in international projects concerned with curriculum development, higher education, and educational innovation.
