Eco-Habits in Ulaanbaatar: Rethinking Plastic Bags and Short Drives
Problems : As someone who grew up in Mongolia, I noticed that we rely heavily on disposable products in our daily lives. Whenever I go shopping at local stores, they give out so many plastic bags without hesitation, and few people think to bring their own. On top of that, many people tend to drive personal cars even for very short distances that could easily be walked. These small, everyday habits accumulate and contribute to the waste issues and air pollution in our cities.
Solvings : To tackle these everyday issues, we could suggest a campus or community campaign that encourages carrying a simple reusable tote bag. Stores could also start encouraging this by offering small discounts to customers who bring their own bags. For the driving habit, it would be a great idea to introduce a "Walk for the Sky" challenge, where people are motivated to walk instead of drive for trips under 10 minutes. These small shifts in our daily routines could gradually reduce plastic waste and help clear our skies.
I liked this SOH because it clearly identifies environmental problems that you personally noticed in your daily life in Mongolia. The examples of plastic bag use and driving even for short distances made the problem easy to understand. I also think the reusable bag idea and “Walk for the Sky” challenge are realistic actions that people can actually try. I hope these small changes can encourage more people to build eco-friendly habits in their everyday lives. Great work! 🌱

ReplyDelete* Clear & Important Problem (Good): Accurately pinpoints everyday causes of pollution in Ulaanbaatar—specifically disposable plastic bag overuse and unnecessary short-distance driving (<10 mins)—rather than relying on abstract macro-industrial issues.
* Feasibility of Solution (Excellent): Highest feasibility among proposed ideas, focusing on actionable micro-habits (reusable tote bag campaigns and the "Walk for the Sky" walking challenge) that youth and community members can execute immediately without policy or budgetary delays.
* Sustainability of Solution (Moderate): Seeks long-term environmental benefits by driving mindset shifts and encouraging sustainable daily habits among residents.
* Clarity & Persuasiveness of Plan (Moderate): Features direct and persuasive logic connecting real-world observations directly to practical, individual action.
