[Seeds of HOPE] World Environment Day 2026
1. Program Overview
In celebration of World Environment Day
2026, the international collaborative project “Seeds of HOPE” will
bring together elementary, middle, and high school students from Korea and
abroad.
This participatory global initiative
encourages students to explore the future of their local environment and
cities, starting from the communities in which they live, and to creatively
express their ideas through geographic imagination.
Student projects will be uploaded to the
GGS Edu Platform or the GIRI (Geographical Imagination Research Institute)
Platform under the title Seeds of HOPE. Outstanding submissions will be
selected through a fair and transparent online contest process and recognized
with awards.
2. Purpose of the Program
This program is an international
participatory initiative designed to help students explore environmental and
urban futures beginning with their own local communities. Participants will
observe local environmental challenges or sustainability practices and express
their findings through geographic imagination and creative thinking, thereby
connecting local realities with global perspectives.
Through sharing and presenting cases with
peers from Korea and other countries, students will broaden their international
outlook and embody the spirit of World Environment Day through action-oriented
learning.
Furthermore, the program presents a model
that can be integrated into school curricula. At the high school level, it
aligns particularly well with subjects such as Integrated Social Studies,
Integrated Science, Global Citizenship and Geography, Urban
Futures Exploration, and Climate Change and a Sustainable World,
offering a practical and applicable environmental education model for classroom
implementation.
3. Participants
The program is open to elementary, middle,
and high school students from Korea and abroad. It will operate in two tracks:
- Elementary Track
- Middle & High School Track
Each track will be tailored to students’
developmental levels in terms of structure and depth of expression.
All participants will explore environmental
or urban issues based on their local communities and create project outputs
accordingly. Through the online platform, Korean and international students
will share their work, enabling comparative learning and global exchange.
Selected outstanding participants will receive awards.
4. Core Structure: The HOPE Framework
Seeds of HOPE is structured around four key components represented by the acronym
HOPE:
H – Home
Students begin with their own local community (Home).
→ Identify environmental or urban challenges, or discover sustainable practices
in their neighborhood.
O – Overview
Observe local environmental conditions and analyze causes and characteristics.
→ Express findings through photos, maps, drawings, and brief explanations.
P – Plan
Propose solutions to the identified issues.
→ Present creative and age-appropriate solutions.
E – Example
Expand ideas into a global context.
→ Share real or hypothetical case studies and discuss broader applications.

5. Implementation Method
Students will follow the HOPE framework to
explore environmental or urban topics in their local communities and produce
visual and explanatory content.
Completed projects will be shared online
under the title Seeds of HOPE through social media and designated
platforms, where participants from Korea and other countries can provide
real-time feedback and encouragement.
Initial selections will be based on peer
engagement (such as likes and feedback). Final evaluation will consider:
- Understanding of the topic
- Awareness of local environmental issues
- Creativity and clarity of expression
- Practical applicability and potential impact
Final awardees will be selected through a
comprehensive evaluation process that includes presentations.

7. Award Plan
After peer feedback and platform-based
evaluation, selected projects will undergo qualitative content assessment.
Among the submissions uploaded to the GGS
and GIRI platforms, projects that receive strong online engagement will be
shortlisted. Final evaluation will consider presentation quality, topic
understanding, awareness of local issues, and creativity of proposed solutions.
The final awards ceremony will take place
on June 5, World Environment Day, reinforcing both the educational and
symbolic significance of this international collaborative initiative.
8. Curriculum Integration
The program has been designed with
curriculum integration in mind.
For elementary and middle schools, it can
be linked to social studies, science, environmental education, special thematic
classes, or club activities focused on local environmental exploration.
At the high school level, it aligns with
subjects such as Integrated Social Studies, Integrated Science, Global
Citizenship and Geography, Urban Futures Exploration, and Climate
Change and a Sustainable World, as well as interdisciplinary research
projects and student-led Project-Based Learning (PBL).
Because the entire process is managed
through an online platform, administrative burdens for teachers are minimized
while enabling practical implementation within the formal curriculum.
9. Expected Outcomes
This program empowers students to recognize
and address environmental and urban challenges within their own communities.
By sharing and presenting projects with
peers from other countries, students engage in comparative learning and expand
their global perspectives.
Through its integration with subjects such
as Urban Futures Exploration and Climate Change and a Sustainable
World, the program bridges academic learning and real-world action.
Ultimately, Seeds of HOPE serves as
both an educational model and a symbolic international initiative celebrating
World Environment Day through participatory, student-centered environmental
action.
