Although the Ica Desert lies right next to the Pacific Ocean, it is one of the driest regions in the world. While areas near the ocean are usually expected to be humid or receive a lot of rainfall, the Humboldt Current lowers the sea surface temperature, preventing air from rising. As a result, the Ica Desert presents a unique landscape where the beach and desert coexist. But then, doesn’t the salinity of the sea affect agriculture in the desert?
Can you provide an explanation or photo materials of artificial facilities that supply water for agriculture in the desert?
These days, the average temperature in Korea ranges from 10 to 20 degrees Celsius, with a significant difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures. In particular, the warm sunlight during the day can cause temperatures to approach 20 degrees, contributing to the active growth of trees and flowers. As a result, cherry blossoms have bloomed in Seoul, making spring outings and festivals popular. However, in Yeongjongdo, where I live, the thermal inertia is greater, so the temperature rises more slowly, and the flowers have not yet fully bloomed.
In the past, Korea was able to enjoy vibrant spring festivals thanks to its distinct four seasons, but now spring is gradually disappearing. Since the 2010s, heat wave advisories that used to be issued only in the summer have started to appear in spring. This unusual climate pattern, where summer is getting longer and spring is fading away, makes it clear that the beauty of the four seasons we once appreciated is becoming a thing of the past.
To address this climate change, South Korea has set a national goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. The country is implementing international agreements such as the Paris Agreement and is fostering a social atmosphere where many citizens and organizations use recycled products.
Meanwhile, in Peru, about 70% of the population lives in desert regions, and the glaciers of the Andes Mountains are a crucial water source. As global warming accelerates, the glaciers are melting more rapidly, which worsens the spread of crop diseases and intensifies water shortages along the densely populated western coast—thereby accelerating desertification. To address this, the Peruvian government is promoting environmental initiatives at the national level by cooperating with international efforts such as the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and the Peace Forest Initiative.
In relation to this, are there any agricultural innovation technologies being introduced to support sustainable farming?

Hello! My name is Lerato, and I’m from South Africa 🇿🇦. I’m fascinated by Peru’s unique landscapes and rich cultural heritage, especially Machu Picchu and the ancient civilizations. I’m curious — in addition to national environmental initiatives like the UNCCD and the Peace Forest Initiative, are there any innovative agricultural technologies being introduced to support sustainable farming in Peru? I’d love to learn more about how Peru is balancing preservation of its natural wonders with modern farming and development.”
