Just added my Connectography Speech of Pakistan!
Check out the video and let’s learn about Pakistan together.
Connectography Speech for World Environment Day 2025 | Lee Tae Hoon (Pakistan) | 042
1. Punjab Plain
Punjab in Pakistan is a province located in the eastern part of the country. Similar to how Bengal was politically divided into East and West Bengal, Punjab was also divided for political reasons into Indian Punjab and Pakistani Punjab. For clarity, the Pakistani side is often referred to as West Punjab.
The province covers an area of 205,344 km², and has a population density of approximately 650 people per square kilometer. With a population of around 130 million, over half of Pakistan’s total population (approximately 240 million) resides in this province. The “P” in PAKISTAN stands for Punjab, symbolizing its foundational importance to the nation.
Question:
The Punjab region is known as a fertile alluvial plain formed by the five major tributaries of the Indus River. I understand that its fertile characteristics contribute to a high population-carrying capacity. I would like to know in more detail what economic role the Punjab Plain plays due to these characteristics.
2. Kashmir Region
The Kashmir region is a mountainous area in the northern part of South Asia, known for its complex topography and geopolitical sensitivity. It lies at the crossroads of India, Pakistan, and China, making it important not only environmentally but also politically and militarily.
The area forms the western part of the Himalayas, with mountain peaks rising over 3,000 meters. These ranges contain glaciers and permanent snowfields. Places like Kargil and Drass are among the coldest inhabited regions in the world during winter.
Nestled between the mountains is the Kashmir Valley, a broad, flat basin located at about 1,500–1,800 meters above sea level. The Jhelum River runs through it, supporting agriculture in the region. The fertile soil and abundant water resources allow the cultivation of high-altitude specialty crops such as apples, cherries, and saffron.
The Kashmir region is also a vital source of river systems, including the upper Indus River, the Jhelum, and the Chenab. These rivers are essential for local agriculture, water supply, and hydroelectric power. At the same time, the control of these water sources is a major source of conflict between India and Pakistan.
To the east lies the Ladakh Plateau, with elevations ranging from 3,500 to 5,000 meters. It is a dry, rocky, high-altitude desert similar in geography and culture to the Tibetan Plateau.
Question:
It is known that agriculture has developed even in high-altitude areas such as the Kashmir Valley. I would like to understand how agricultural activity has managed to develop in such mountainous regions, and what geographic or environmental adaptations made this possible.
Picture : I would like to receive a photo of people living their cultural and everyday lives in the Kashmir Valley.
1. Recent Weather in Korea
Currently, Korea is transitioning into spring, and the weather is gradually becoming milder. In most regions, daytime temperatures hover in the low 20s (°C), creating a pleasantly warm atmosphere. However, due to occasional cold snaps known as “kkotsaemchuwi” (spring cold spells), there are still some chilly days. Moreover, the daily temperature range is relatively large, so many people can be seen wearing light outerwear to adjust to the changing temperatures.
2. Climate Change and Weather Issues
I understand that Pakistan is one of the countries most vulnerable to climate change. After looking into some recent news, I learned that extreme temperatures close to 50°C have been recorded, particularly in the Punjab region, where such climate phenomena have become especially severe. In addition, I found reports about the nationwide flood in 2022 and the ongoing issue of chronic droughts in certain areas.
Experts suggest that Pakistan may continue to experience a rise in average surface temperatures, which could lead to even more severe heatwaves in the future. For this reason, I would like to ask about how the local population perceives the effects of climate change and whether people have personally experienced such climate-related events.
Moreover, I have also read that these climate changes have had a significant impact on Pakistan's economy. Continuous natural disasters have reportedly led to rising inflation and reduced yields of key crops. I am curious to learn more about how exactly Pakistan's economy has been affected in recent years due to these environmental challenges.
3. Environmental Policy of the Country
I also learned that Pakistan recently participated in the 2023 International Conference on Climate Resilient Pakistan held in Geneva. This conference, co-hosted by the Pakistani government and the United Nations, focused on addressing the country’s climate issues through international support and long-term partnerships. One of the main objectives was to implement a cooperative financial mechanism to support Pakistan’s recovery from the devastating 2022 floods, which resulted in over 15,000 casualties and widespread damage to agricultural land and infrastructure, pushing many into poverty.
The main goal of the conference was to establish long-term collaboration and recovery efforts using the “4RF” framework—Resilient Recovery, Rehabilitation, and Reconstruction Framework. I would like to ask if Pakistan is currently making meaningful progress in addressing environmental issues through such initiatives.
Hello! My name is Lee Tae Hoon, and I’m a high school student from South Korea. I love learning about different cultures, making new friends, and exploring global connections. That’s why I’m currently working on a connectography project about Pakistan, and I’m really excited to learn more about the country’s geography, economy, and cultural ties with the world. I enjoy understanding how different countries are interconnected. In my free time, I like to play baseball. I’m always eager to explore new perspectives on global issues. Through this project, I hope to gain deeper insights into Pakistan’s role in the world and how connectivity shapes our future. I would love to exchange ideas with you and hear your thoughts. Let’s make meaningful connections.
