South Africa's east coast borders the Indian Ocean and is influenced by the Mozambique turbulence, making it an area rich in water vapor. As this oceanic air travels inland, it encounters the Drakensberg Mountains, and the moist air rises up the mountain ranges (windward slopes) and falls as rain. Conversely, the air over the mountains has lost most of its moisture in the east, so it becomes drier as it travels west. (It becomes drier as it travels up the windward slope.)
Wet valleys formed in the Paleozoic Era and subjected to erosion over long periods of time, with low elevations, gentle slopes, and a stable crust, are called high-mountain valleys. The Drakensberg Mountains are included in the High Wetlands. The Drakensberg Mountains are characterized as High Wetlands because they are not continuous and most of them are not high in elevation. The High Plains are rich in coal and iron ore deposits.
I want to know if the Drakensberg Mountains in South Africa have coal and iron ore deposits, and if so, how much of an impact they have on the country.
The weather in Korea has warmed up a lot lately as we've entered the spring season, with daytime temperatures usually ranging from 16 to 24 degrees Celsius. The skies are usually cloudy or lightly misty, with the occasional sprinkle of rain. The air is particularly dry these days, and some areas are under a dryness advisory, so it's important to pay attention to fire prevention and moisturizing your skin. In addition, yellow dust and fine dust may temporarily increase during the spring, so wearing a mask is recommended on days with poor air quality.
Looking at the weather in Korea these days, it's clear that it's different from what it used to be. It's springtime, but the temperature fluctuates wildly, with daytime temperatures suddenly rising to over 25 degrees Celsius, and the next day it's nearly 10 degrees Celsius chilly. This is becoming more and more common, blurring the lines between seasons.
In addition, dryness advisories are frequently issued even in the spring, which often leads to large-scale wildfires. This erratic weather is not just a seasonal feature, but is often seen as an effect of global warming and climate change.
The previously distinct seasons are becoming shorter, summers are longer and hotter, winters are shorter, and extreme weather events such as severe cold and heavy snowfall are on the rise. People are experiencing climate change firsthand, especially in cities, as air pollution such as fine particulate matter and yellow dust are combined with climate issues.
One of South Africa's environmental policies, the Just Energy Transition Investment Plan (JET IP), is a national investment plan created to help South Africa transition from a coal-dominated energy system to a renewable and sustainable energy system. I'm curious why this policy emphasizes equity, rather than just energy transition.
