Connectography Speech for World Environment Day 2025 | Choi Seo Yoon (Belgium) | 126
As far as I know, Belgium's coastal area bordering the western North Sea has a low altitude, and Belgium's east is relatively high. Did these topographical features affect the lifestyle of the western and eastern Belgian residents? What is the threat to Belgium, which has a low altitude in the west, when sea levels rise due to global warming?
I'm wondering if there's an image that clearly shows how Belgium's elevation is lower in the west and relatively higher in the east. Could you share a picture like that?
The weather in Korea these days is around 11 degrees on average, and the general spring weather continues. However, due to the large daily temperature difference between day and night, wearing multiple layers of thin clothes is good for responding to the daily temperature difference. There are also several areas where cherry blossoms are in full bloom, so it is good to go out in the warm afternoon. However, in some areas where cherry blossoms were in full bloom around this time last year, they have not yet bloomed this year. The delay in blooming this year seems to be due to spring temperatures being lower or more inconsistent than last year. This delay is likely influenced by climate change. Climate change appears to be affecting plant growth, including cherry blossoms, by making weather patterns more unpredictable. These environmental changes may become more serious in the future, and there is a need to come up with thorough countermeasures. I saw in the newspaper that Brussels and other cities in Belgium are restricting the operation of vehicles and encouraging the use of public transportation and bicycles through Car-Free Day events for the environment. Can you tell me if there has been a noticeable environmental effect of conducting this event?
From overseas news, I also heard that Belgium converted the EU's Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) into national law, requiring companies to report ESG information, including climate change and environmental impact, to meet the EU standards (ESRS). From this, I think Belgium is an exemplary country for realizing carbon neutrality. So, how much is Belgium's carbon neutrality strategy compared to other European countries, and what environmental policies differentiate it?
