Hello! My name is Igang a Sejong Global High School student from Korea. It’s a great honor to connect with Brazil’s buddy in this program.

I’m from Daejeon, South Korea. Daejeon is a science innovation city, and it’s specialty, bread, attracts many visitors from other cities.

I have a strong interest in Brazil’s Favela city, where many developments and projects have taken place to redevelop the region. This phenomenon is very similar to Korea’s redevelopment projects in Seoul. I am typically interested in spacial inequality in a city or country and if possible, I would like to suggest acheivable solutions .

  1. It's very interesting to see someone who is interested in what is considered by many countries to be the "ugly" part of Brazil. But this phenomenon is not due to the fact that people simply want to live in the hills, but rather because of a historical factor! They emerged at the beginning of the 20th century, due to migration from the countryside to the cities. Many people sought employment in expanding industrial cities, and settled in areas without infrastructure. These areas were known as “cortiços” and housed poor workers and immigrants. Some people from the government even tried to remove it, but itbecame a part of the brazilian culture, almost like a patrimony. A large portion of them are located in risky regions whose relief and soil make them areas of very low interest for real estate speculation and for classes that have a minimum of housing options.
There is no fixed solution as of today, but some of the most popular suggestions for such an improvement would be:

    Improve infrastructure for walkability.

    Strengthen the public transport network.
    Invest in cyclomobility.

    Improve security through public facilities.
