H (Home Region)
In Osan, where I live, illegally dumped trash can be found in many places, including around streetlights, in alleyways, and near bus stops. Much of this waste is left behind by nearby businesses and passersby.
O (Objective & Observation)
Illegally dumped waste damages the appearance of streets and can cause unpleasant odors and pest infestations. It also contributes to environmental pollution and lowers residents' quality of life. More importantly, it can create the perception that 'if others are doing it, it's okay for me to do it too,' leading to repeated littering and illegal dumping.
P (Plan)
To solve this problem, we can encourage citizen participation by organizing anti-illegal-dumping campaigns at local festivals and school events. We can also create a warning effect by putting up warning signs and posters. In addition, promoting environmental protection through social media by posting card news, short-form videos, or running challenges can help improve public awareness.
Furthermore, community clean-up activities can be carried out with local residents, such as operating an “Osan Clean Day” and cleaning alleys, parks, and areas around streams. Environmental education in cooperation with schools, including environmental protection programs, hands-on activities, and student-led campaigns, can also be an effective solution.
E (Evaluation & Evidenve)
A real-life example is Suwon City's “Clean-up Day” initiative. Suwon has been carrying out street-cleaning activities with local residents and has worked to raise awareness about illegal dumping. As citizens actively participated and environmental education and promotional activities were conducted, positive results were seen in reducing illegal dumping and creating cleaner streets. If similar citizen participation programs were implemented in Osan, the city could become a cleaner, safer, and more pleasant place to live.
