Just added my Connectography Speech of Kenya!
Check out the video and let’s learn about Kenya together.
Connectography Speech for World Environment Day 2025 | Seo Ji Soo (Kenya) | 006
Since Mount Elgon straddles both Kenya and Uganda, how are geographic borders and environmental conservation policies managed between the two countries?
The Mount Elgon region, unlike the steep escarpments typically found in the Rift Valley, has the gentle slopes of a shield volcano. How does this affect water flow and soil distribution in the surrounding area?
Here are the types of photos I would like to receive from someone living in Kenya:
A photo showing the city of Nairobi, where natural and human environments are beautifully intertwined.
A photo of the Kenyan savanna grasslands, featuring wild animals inhabiting the area.
Introducing Korea's Spring Weather!
Hi everyone!
I wanted to share a bit about what the weather is like these days in Korea. Right now, we’re in the middle of spring, and it’s honestly one of the most beautiful times of the year here!
During the day, the temperature usually stays around 15 to 22°C (59 to 72°F), which is perfect for going outside without feeling too hot or cold. The skies are mostly clear and sunny, and there's a light breeze that makes everything feel fresh.
What makes spring even more special in Korea are the cherry blossoms! Parks and streets are filled with pink and white flowers, and people love going on picnics or just walking under the blooming trees. It's also the season when a lot of school and university festivals happen, so it’s a lively time.
Sometimes we get a bit of yellow dust (fine dust coming from deserts in China and Mongolia), so we check the air quality before going out and wear masks if needed. But overall, the weather is super nice and refreshing.
Hope you can visit Korea during spring one day and see it for yourself!
In South Korea, unseasonal weather phenomena—such as snowfall in April—have recently been observed. These events are difficult to regard as mere irregularities in weather and are instead interpreted as clear signs of global climate change, including global warming. The boundaries between seasons are becoming increasingly blurred, and fluctuations in precipitation and temperature are growing more extreme. This shift is having a multifaceted impact not only on daily life but also on agriculture, ecosystems, and energy resource management.
Such climate-related anomalies are not limited to South Korea. Similar patterns are occurring around the world. For instance, Kenya has been experiencing repeated cycles of severe drought and flooding, leading to serious challenges in food production and securing water resources. These issues contribute to regional economic instability and pose significant threats to the sustainability of sectors such as public health and education.
Therefore, the recent abnormal weather patterns observed in Korea should not be viewed solely as a domestic issue. They serve as a wake-up call that the global community is facing a climate crisis. In response, nations must establish cooperative frameworks to address climate change and pursue concrete environmental policies and practices—such as reducing carbon emissions, expanding renewable energy, and restoring ecosystems
1) Climate Change Laws and Policies
a. Climate Change Act
This law established the legal foundation for Kenya’s response to climate change. It led to the creation of the National Climate Change Council, which promotes cooperation among national and local governments, the private sector, and civil society to strengthen climate resilience and pursue low-carbon development.
b. National Climate Change Action Plan (NCCAP)
Following the first action plan (2013–2017), the second phase (2018–2022) was implemented with the goal of fostering climate-resilient, low-carbon development through both adaptation and mitigation strategies.
2) Carbon Market Regulation
Carbon Markets Regulations (2024)
In July 2024, Kenya introduced this regulatory framework to govern the operation of carbon markets. The regulation standardizes the management of carbon projects and mandates the establishment of a national carbon registry, where all carbon-related projects are to be officially recorded.
3) Forest Restoration and Conservation
National Tree Growing Day
On November 13, 2023, Kenya designated an annual public holiday for large-scale tree planting. The national goal is to plant 15 billion trees by 2032 as part of broader efforts to restore forests and conserve ecosystems.
[Question 1]
While the Kenyan government has established an annual public holiday to promote large-scale tree planting, I am curious to know how the trees planted through this initiative are being sustainably managed over the long term.
Beyond symbolic or event-based planting, is there a structured system in place for monitoring, maintaining, and ensuring the survival of these trees, particularly in alignment with the broader policy goals of ecosystem restoration?
[Question 2]
The Carbon Markets Regulations introduced in 2024 aim to formalize Kenya’s carbon trading system and establish official procedures.
In this context, I would like to ask:
-Is the carbon market in Kenya currently being effectively managed and regulated under this legal framework?
-Are there any known cases of informal or illegal carbon-related transactions occurring outside the regulated system?
-Furthermore, does the regulation provide sufficient legal authority to control and prevent such unlawful activities, and what kind of enforcement or oversight mechanisms are in place to support compliance?
Hi! My name is Seo Jisoo, and I’m a high school student at Incheon Haneul High School in South Korea. 🇰🇷
I’ve always been curious about the world, especially when it comes to geography and how people live in different environments.
Lately, I’ve become really interested in Kenya’s diverse climate and geography. I find it amazing that one country can have humid tropical coasts, dry desert regions, and cool highlands all in one place. I’d love to learn more about how these differences shape daily life in Kenya.
I’m excited to connect with people from all over the world and hear about your experiences. Thank you for reading! 😊
I have gone though your research and I really love it. Let's connect on-line... and I really want to meet you at your schoool in Korea during my stay in August 2025.
