In the eastern part of the Palestinian West Bank, a very unique topography of the Dead Sea appears. The Dead Sea is a very saline lake, so it got the name 'Death Sea', which means the sea of death. The main reason for the formation of such a high-salinity lake is the low altitude of the area. The area where the Dead Sea appears is the lowest land in the world at 430m below sea level. As a result, water flows into this area from the Jordan River in the north, evaporation occurs constantly, and the salt has become very rich. The concentration of salt in this area is close to 34%, and it is denser than the general sea, so even non-swimmers can easily float in the Dead Sea. The Dead Sea is gaining popularity as a representative tourist spot due to its unique scenery, but the area of the Dead Sea has recently decreased due to a decrease in the amount of water in the Jordan River, which is a problem.
However, in springtime like now, there are always uninvited visitors. It is yellow dust. Yellow dust is the phenomenon in which sand is blown from China's Gobi Desert by strong winds, including westerly winds. As global warming has intensified in recent years, the desert area is getting larger, and as a result, yellow dust is expected to occur more frequently in the future.
In order to solve this problem, international efforts beyond the efforts of a single country are essential. I understand that Mediterranean and dry climates are common in Palestine. If global warming worsens, it could cause major problems in Palestine. Having examined it through Internet research and conversations with several Palestinian friends, I have found that there is currently no clear environmental policy implemented by the Palestinian government. Perhaps this is because the conflict with Israel has left them unable to afford to discuss environmental issues. I sincerely hope that in the future, the war that is killing many people will cease, and that Palestine will have a stable environment where environmental policy can be seriously discussed.
