Connectography Speech for World Environment Day 2025 | Lee Jiwan (Trinidad and Tobago) | 041
Fort king George is a fortress that was built in 1779 when Trinidad and Tobago was a British colony. Construction began in 1777, and it was completed in 1779. In June 1781, Tobago fell to the French. In 1784, the French army under General Blancherland started building a fortress on a hill. Construction was halted in 1785, and then resumed in 1786 under Earl Dylan's rule. The fortress was named "Fort Castries." In 1789, it was renamed "Fort Republique" and in 1790, "Fort Liberte" when the garrison revolted. The British took back the fortress in 1793.
Tobago was returned to France in 1801, but it became a British colony again in 1803. The fortress was called "Fort King George," after George III, in 1804. Most of the buildings were damaged and destroyed by the hurricane on Oct. 11, 1847, and the garrison was maintained until 1854.
Today the fort is undergoing restoration and reconstruction, and will be renamed Fort King George Heritage Park.
