Here is my SoH idea for creating a cleaner and more sustainable California.
Home - I lived in California, USA, for one year. During my time there, I learned that California generates a huge amount of waste every day. Although recycling programs exist, a large portion of waste is still sent to landfills. This issue caught my attention because waste management directly affects both the environment and the quality of life of local communities.
Overview - One of the main reasons for this problem is the heavy reliance on landfills. Because the United States has relatively large areas of available land, burying waste has traditionally been a common disposal method. However, landfill waste produces methane gas, a greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change. In addition, harmful liquid called leachate can leak into soil and groundwater if landfill sites are not properly managed. Another challenge is that many recyclable materials are not correctly separated from general waste, reducing the efficiency of recycling systems.
Plan - To address these issues, I believe California should strengthen waste separation systems and improve environmental awareness among citizens. Schools and local communities can provide education on recycling and responsible waste disposal. At the same time, local governments should invest in better landfill management and encourage residents to reduce, reuse, and recycle more effectively.
Execute - To implement this plan, public campaigns and educational programs can be organized to promote proper waste sorting and recycling habits. In addition, landfill facilities should install and maintain protective liner systems to prevent leachate from contaminating soil and groundwater. By combining stronger environmental policies with active citizen participation, California can reduce landfill waste, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and create a cleaner and more sustainable future for generations to come.
