GINUE Friend : Sophie from Anyang to Europe
Hi, my name is Gayeong Kim.
I was born in Gunpo, Gyeonggi-do, and moved to Anyang when I was seven years old. I have been living in Anyang ever since.
Since I was young, I traveled frequently both within Korea and abroad with my parents, who love traveling. Through these experiences, I was able to broaden my geographical perspective.
After entering Gyeongin National University of Education, I took advantage of one of its greatest strengths - its special activity week ‘Gahakju’ and vacations - to travel overseas as well. Based on these experiences, I developed a dream of teaching children abroad in the future.
Last October, during Gahakju, I visited Sydney with my classmates. It was such a happy and meaningful time that I chose this photo because I really want to remember that special moment.
안녕하세요 저는 김가영 입니다. 영어이름은 Sophie입니다. 저는 경기도 군포에서 태어났고, 7살 때 안양으로 이사와서 현재까지 안양에서 살고 있습니다. 저는 어렸을 때부터 여행을 좋아하시는 부모님을 따라 국내 및 해외여행을 많이 다녀보았습니다. 따라서 지리적 견해를 넓힐 수 있었습니다. 경인교대에 입학해서는 경인교대의 가장 큰 장점이라고 할 수 있는 가학주 때나, 방학 때마다 해외여행을 다녀왔습니다. 이러한 경험을 바탕으로 나중에는 해외에서 아이들을 가르쳐보고싶다는 꿈도 생겼습니다. 작년 10월 가학주 때 동기들과 시드니를 다녀왔었는데 너무 행복한 시간이었고 꼭 기억하고 싶어서 이 사진을 선정했습니다.

동대문 중앙아시아거리에 위치한 베트남 슈퍼마켓이다. 이곳에서는 베트남 라면, 소스, 향신료 등 한국에서 보기 힘든 다양한 식재료를 판매하고 있다. 이를 통해 이 공간이 단순한 상점이 아니라 베트남 사람들의 생활이 반영된 장소임을 알 수 있었다. 나는 이곳을 보며 동대문 일대가 다양한 문화가 공존하는 다문화 공간이라는 점을 느꼈다. 또한 외국인뿐 아니라 한국인에게도 새로운 문화를 경험할 수 있는 의미 있는 공간이라고 생각했다.
It is a Vietnamese supermarket located in the Central Asian Street area of Dongdaemun. The store sells a variety of ingredients that are difficult to find in ordinary Korean supermarkets, such as Vietnamese instant noodles, sauces, and spices. Through this, I realized that the place is not just a store but also a space that reflects the daily lives and culture of Vietnamese people.
Looking around this supermarket, I felt that the Dongdaemun area is a multicultural space where diverse cultures coexist. I also thought that it is a meaningful place not only for foreigners but also for Koreans, as it provides opportunities to experience and learn about different cultures.
에베레스트 레스토랑의 내부 모습이다. 식당 안에는 네팔 국기와 현지 장식들이 걸려 있어 인도와 네팔의 분위기를 그대로 느낄 수 있었다. 단순히 음식을 먹는 공간을 넘어, 현지 문화를 체험할 수 있는 장소라는 점이 인상적이었다. 나는 이곳에서 마치 해외여행을 온 것 같은 느낌을 받았다. 이를 통해 음식점이 문화 경험의 공간으로도 기능할 수 있음을 느꼈다.
This is the interior of Everest Restaurant. Inside the restaurant, Nepalese flags and traditional decorations are displayed, allowing visitors to experience the atmosphere of Nepal and India. What impressed me most was that it is more than just a place to eat; it is also a space where people can experience local culture.
I felt as if I were traveling abroad while staying in Korea. Through this experience, I realized that restaurants can serve not only as places for dining but also as spaces for cultural exchange and cultural experiences.
에베레스트 레스토랑에서 주문한 음식이다. 난과 커리, 치킨, 볶음면, 라씨를 함께 먹으며 인도와 네팔의 대표적인 음식을 직접 경험할 수 있었다. 평소 접하기 어려운 향신료의 맛이 인상적이었고, 음식만으로도 다른 문화를 느낄 수 있었다. 나는 이를 통해 음식이 문화 이해의 중요한 매개가 될 수 있다고 생각했다.
This is the food I ordered at Everest Restaurant. By enjoying naan, curry, chicken, fried noodles, and lassi, I was able to experience some of the most representative dishes of India and Nepal firsthand. The unique flavors of the spices, which are not commonly encountered in everyday life, were especially impressive, and I was able to gain a sense of a different culture through the food alone.
Through this experience, I came to realize that food can serve as an important medium for understanding and appreciating different cultures.
덕수궁 앞 리에제 와플 가게의 모습이다. 이곳은 벨기에식 와플을 판매하는 곳으로, 우리 조의 ‘한국에서 세계 나라 체험하기’라는 주제와 잘 맞는 장소였다. 우리는 이곳에서 디저트를 먹으며 유럽의 음식 문화를 간접적으로 경험할 수 있었다. 나는 일상적인 공간에서도 다양한 나라의 문화를 쉽게 접할 수 있다는 점이 흥미롭게 느껴졌다.
This is a Liège waffle shop located in front of Deoksugung Palace. The shop specializes in Belgian-style waffles, making it a perfect fit for our group's theme, “Experiencing Countries Around the World in Korea.” By enjoying dessert there, we were able to indirectly experience a part of European food culture.
I found it interesting that people can easily encounter and experience cultures from different countries even in everyday places. This experience showed me that opportunities for cultural learning and exchange can be found in ordinary spaces around us.
덕수궁 석조전의 모습이다. 석조전은 서양식 건축 양식을 반영한 건물로, 전통 궁궐 안에서 이질적인 분위기를 형성하고 있다. 이를 통해 한국 근대 시기 서양 문화가 유입되었던 흔적을 확인할 수 있었다. 나는 이 공간을 보며 한국 역시 외국 문화를 수용하며 변화해왔다는 점을 느꼈다. 또한 이번 답사의 주제처럼, 한 공간 안에서도 다양한 문화가 공존할 수 있음을 생각하게 되었다.
This is Seokjojeon Hall at Deoksugung Palace. Seokjojeon is a building that reflects Western architectural styles, creating a distinctive atmosphere within the traditional palace grounds. Through this building, I was able to see evidence of the influence of Western culture during Korea’s modern period.
Looking at this space, I realized that Korea has also changed and developed by accepting and adapting foreign cultures. In addition, it made me reflect on the theme of our field trip: that diverse cultures can coexist within a single space while maintaining their unique characteristics.
