Ambassador H. E. Togolani Edriss MAVURA(45), the Tanzanian Ambassador to Korea, is widely admired as a diplomat who actively promotes Africa’s strength and vision. He played an important role in the Korea–Africa Summit held in Seoul and is known as a “communication champion” for his diverse engagement with Korean society.
Ambassador Mavura emphasized that the summit provides “a valuable platform that links the African Union’s long-term vision, Agenda 2063, with the Korean government’s Indo-Pacific Strategy, which aims to position Korea as a global pivotal state.”
He noted that a key issue is how to expand trade between Korea and African nations, pointing out that “Africa accounts for only 1% of Korea’s total trade volume.”
He expressed hope that economic cooperation would expand into deeper forms of social interaction across arts, tourism, education, and business—allowing students, entrepreneurs, and people from all sectors to engage more actively and meaningfully.
Ambassador Mavura highlighted the rapid transformation of Africa, saying, “Over the past 20 years, all 54 African countries have undergone significant changes, and the potential for further development remains wide open.” He added that many still hold misconceptions that business or exchange activities in Africa are difficult, stressing the need for reliable and accessible information platforms.
He also participated in the “2024 International Children’s Marathon” in Seoul, running 4.2 kilometers in the rain alongside more than 2,100 participants, to raise awareness for Tanzanian children facing food insecurity and to support nutrition and livelihood programs.
As a board member of Save the Children Tanzania and the Save the Children Africa Advisory Committee, Ambassador Mavura explained that efforts such as raising vaccination rates for children under five to 97% have helped reduce stunting. However, he stressed that many children still suffer from malnutrition due to climate crises and poverty.
“Korea and Africa need each other.”
“We must work together to address issues such as supply chain disruptions, economic resilience, and preparedness for future shocks and pandemics. There are tremendous opportunities for growth and mutual prosperity.
