Hello, everyone. My name is Choi Yun-seo, and I’m very happy to introduce myself and my hometown to you today. I was born and raised in Pohang, a coastal city located in North Gyeongsang Province in South Korea. Ever since I was young, the sound of waves and the open view of the East Sea have been a natural part of my daily life. One of the things I love most about living in Pohang is that Yeongildae Beach, one of the city’s most famous tourist attractions, is only about a ten-minute walk from my home. Because of this, the beach has always felt like an extension of my backyard—somewhere I can relax, take a walk, and enjoy the beauty of nature.
I am someone who loves exploring new places and learning about the world. Traveling is one of my biggest interests, and it has made me curious about the geography, history, and culture of other countries. Geography, in particular, is one of my favorite subjects because it helps me understand how people live in different environments and how various cultures have developed. Through studying geography and experiencing different cultures, I hope to grow into a responsible global citizen—someone who respects diversity, embraces new ideas, and contributes positively to the world. Becoming a wonderful adult who understands and appreciates the world around me is one of my biggest goals.
Now, I’d like to introduce Pohang, the place I proudly call my hometown. Pohang is well known as a dynamic port city that blends industrial strength with natural beauty. It is home to POSCO, one of the world’s leading steel companies, which has played a major role in the city’s development. But despite its industrial identity, Pohang has an incredibly warm and inviting atmosphere. The city is filled with scenic beaches, delicious seafood markets, and cultural landmarks. One popular destination is Homigot Sunrise Square, where people gather to watch the first sunrise of the New Year. The giant “Hand of Harmony” sculpture rising from the sea makes the sunrise even more unforgettable. Pohang offers a unique combination of energy, culture, and natural charm that makes it special and memorable to both residents and visitors.
Among all the things Pohang is famous for, the Pohang International Fire & Light Festival is one of the most iconic. This festival takes place every summer along the coastline, especially near Yeongildae Beach. During the festival, the entire city lights up with spectacular firework shows, laser displays, and musical performances. The night sky becomes a giant canvas where vibrant colors explode into beautiful patterns. People of all ages gather at the beach, enjoying food, music, and various cultural events. What I love about this festival is not just the fireworks themselves, but the feeling of excitement and unity it creates. Families, friends, and even tourists from other countries come together to share the moment.
The festival’s theme, “Bright Life, Better Tomorrow,” represents Pohang’s forward-looking spirit. It celebrates hope, joy, and the belief that light can guide us toward a better future. For me, this festival is more than just an event—it is a symbol of Pohang’s identity as a bright, energetic, and welcoming city. Whenever I see the fireworks illuminating the sky, I am reminded of how proud I am to have grown up here.
In conclusion, Pohang is a place filled with beauty, culture, and warmth, and I feel grateful to call it my home. By sharing my story, I hope you can understand why this city means so much to me. I also hope more people from around the world will have the chance to visit Pohang, experience its stunning coastline, and enjoy the amazing Fire & Light Festival. Thank you for listening, and I look forward to learning more about your countries and cultures as well.
