My name is Sung Gyeol Lee.
My name is given to me by my father and mother, and it means to bear fruit with all your heart and soul by writing Chinese characters with sincerity and determination to bear.
I was born in Gwangmyeong, Gyeonggi-do, but my father decided to return to farming, so I went down to Sangju, Gyeongsangbuk-do at the age of 4 and grew up there until I was 20. The place where I grew up is a very small village where the head of the village is located in the unit of 'ri'. It is a friendly place where you can easily see cultivators, paddy fields, and wild animals on your way to and from school, and I have been growing up with nature as a friend since I was young. Every summer vacation, I lie down on the bench in the yard with my parents to look at the stars together, but I can not see shooting stars at night in the countryside without any light. Those summer days, when I felt and heard the sound of grass and frogs crying, and saw shooting stars, seemed to be the happiest moments I remember.

제 이름은 아버지가 지어주신 이름으로 정성 성, 맺을 결의 한자를 써서 정성을 다해 결실을 맺으라는 의미가 담긴 이름입니다. 저는 이루고자 하는 일이 있을 때, 그 이름의 의미처럼 제가 할 수 있는 모든 최선을 다해 결실을 얻으려 노력하며 살아가고 있습니다.
저는 경기도 광명시에서 태어났지만 아버지가 귀농을 결심하셔 4살 때 경상북도 상주로 내려가 스무 살까지 그곳에서 쭉 자라왔습니다. 제가 자라온 곳은 ‘리’ 단위의 이장님이 계신 아주 작은 마을입니다. 등하교길에 쉽게 경운기, 논 밭, 야생 동물 등을 쉽게 볼 수 있는 정겨운 곳으로 어릴 때부터 자연을 벗 삼아 자라왔습니다. 저는 여름 방학 마다 부모님과 함께 마당의 평상에 누워 함께 별을 구경하곤 하는데 빛 한 점 없는 시골의 밤에선 별똥별도 어렵지 않게 볼 수 있습니다. 여름 밤 풀내음과 개구리 우는 소리와 함께 별똥별을 보았던 그 여름 날들은 제가 기억하는 가장 행복한 순간이었던 것 같습니다.

그리고 요즘 저는 카보베르데라는 나라에 관심을 갖게 되었습니다. 우연히 찾은 독일 공영 다큐멘터리 방송을 통해 카보베르데의 이면을 알게 된 것이 이유입니다. 처음에는 맑은 바다와 아름다운 해변을 가진 관광지라는 이미지로 알게 되었지만, 관련 다큐멘터리 영상을 보며 그 이면에 존재하는 현실을 접하게 되면서 이 나라를 바라보는 시선이 달라졌습니다. 단순한 여행지가 아니라, 관광의 성장 속에서 다양한 사회적 과제를 안고 있는 국가라는 점이 충격으로 다가왔습니다.
이러한 계기를 통해 나는 카보베르데의 화려한 모습뿐만 아니라 그 안에 담긴 현실에도 관심을 갖게 되었고, 앞으로 이 나라의 문화와 사람들의 삶을 더 깊이 알아가고 싶다는 생각이 들었다. 관광으로 인한 경제적 발전이 모든 사람에게 동일한 혜택으로 돌아가는 것은 아니라는 점을 깨닫게 되었고, 그 속에서 살아가는 주민들의 삶과 목소리에 더 귀 기울여야겠다는 생각이 들었습니다. 그리고 이러한 내용을 블로그에 공유함으로써, 많은 분들이 카보베르데가 안고 있는 사회적 이슈와 관광의 이면에 대해 한 번쯤 생각해 보는 계기가 되었으면 좋겠다고 생각했습니다.

Recently, I have become interested in a country called Cape Verde. This interest began when I came across a documentary aired by a German public broadcasting network, which introduced me to a side of Cape Verde that I had not known before. At first, I only associated the country with images of clear blue seas and beautiful beaches, seeing it simply as a popular tourist destination. However, after watching the documentary, my perspective changed as I was exposed to the realities that exist behind its attractive surface. It was striking to realize that Cape Verde is not just a travel destination, but a country facing various social challenges amid the growth of its tourism industry.
Through this experience, I became interested not only in the glamorous image of Cape Verde but also in the realities that lie beneath it. I came to understand that economic development driven by tourism does not benefit everyone equally, and this realization led me to pay closer attention to the lives and voices of the local residents. I also began to wonder how the country might develop in the future, and how people and the environment can be respected and protected in that process. By sharing these thoughts on my blog, I hope that more people will take a moment to reflect on the social issues Cape Verde faces and the hidden side of tourism.
Through this experience, I have grown more curious about Cape Verde beyond its surface-level image, and I would like to continue learning more about its culture and the lives of its people in greater depth.
