About Me, My Place, and How I See the World Through Social Studies
1. Who I Am and Where I’m From
Hello! My name is Eunsong Lee, and I major in English Education in South Korea. Interestingly, my name actually means “silver pine tree", which I believe reflects who I am and how I want to live as a future teacher.
I was born in Changwon and spent many years living in Busan, both of which are coastal cities in the southern part of Korea. Growing up near the sea has deeply influenced who I am. I naturally feel connected to places where nature and everyday life overlap—especially along the ocean or rivers.
Because of this background, I enjoy slow walks by the water, watching how people use these spaces in their daily lives. Over time, I began to notice that places are not just physical locations; they shape how people live, relax, work, and connect with one another. This realization became an important foundation for how I understand society and education today.
2. A Country I’m Interested In: Greece
One country I am especially interested in is Greece. Like the cities I grew up in, Greece is closely connected to the sea. Located in southeastern Europe, it is surrounded by the Mediterranean, Aegean, and Ionian Seas and is home to thousands of islands.
Among them, Santorini fascinates me the most. Its deep blue sea, white architecture, and strong connection between nature and daily life remind me of the coastal environments I am familiar with in Korea. What attracts me is not only its beauty as a travel destination, but also how geography shapes culture, lifestyle, and even economic activities such as tourism.
Through Greece, I became more aware that although countries may be far apart, people living near the sea often share similar ways of interacting with nature. This realization helped me see the world as a collection of connected places rather than isolated countries.
3. What I Have Learned in Social Studies and How I Want to Learn More
Through my coursework so far, I have studied various subjects within social studies, including geography, history, general social studies, and introductory social studies education. Rather than learning these subjects separately, I gradually began to understand how they are closely connected to one another.
For example, geography helped me see how natural environments influence people’s lifestyles, while history showed how past events shape present societies. General social studies allowed me to understand how political, economic, and cultural systems operate in everyday life. These subjects helped me realize that society cannot be understood from a single perspective.
Based on these experiences, I now see Social Studies Education as a subject that brings all these elements together in meaningful ways. In future social studies education courses, I want to learn how to design lessons that start from students’ real-life experiences and gradually expand to local, national, and global contexts. I am especially interested in learning how to create integrated lessons that help students connect their own communities with other regions and countries.
As a future elementary teacher, I hope to teach social studies not as a subject full of facts to memorize, but as a way for students to understand the world they live in and their role within it.
나, 내가 살아온 지역, 그리고 사회과를 통해 바라본 세계
1. 나와 나의 지역
안녕하세요. 저는 한국에서 영어교육을 전공하고 있는 이은송 입니다. 저의 이름은 은빛 소나무라는 의미를 가지고 있는데, 이는 앞으로 교사가 되어 살아가고 싶은 제 모습과도 닮아 있다고 생각합니다.
저는 창원에서 태어나 부산에서 오랜 시간 생활했으며, 두 지역 모두 바다와 가까운 해안 도시라는 공통점을 가지고 있습니다. 이러한 성장 환경은 제 삶의 방식과 가치관에 큰 영향을 주었습니다. 저는 자연과 일상이 만나는 공간, 특히 바다나 강 주변에서 가장 편안함을 느낍니다.
물가를 따라 걷다 보면, 사람들이 그 공간을 어떻게 활용하며 살아가는지가 자연스럽게 보입니다. 이러한 경험을 통해 저는 ‘장소’가 단순한 배경이 아니라, 사람들의 삶과 관계, 문화를 만들어 가는 중요한 요소라는 점을 깨닫게 되었습니다.
2. 내가 관심 있는 나라: 그리스
제가 특히 관심을 가지고 있는 나라는 그리스입니다. 그리스는 유럽 남동부에 위치한 나라로, 지중해·에게해·이오니아해에 둘러싸여 있으며 수많은 섬을 가지고 있습니다. 이러한 해양 환경은 제가 자라온 한국의 해안 도시들과도 자연스럽게 연결됩니다.
그중에서도 산토리니는 바다와 삶이 밀접하게 이어진 공간이라는 점에서 인상 깊었습니다. 아름다운 풍경뿐만 아니라, 자연환경이 문화와 생활 방식, 관광 산업에까지 영향을 미치는 모습을 통해 지리적 환경의 중요성을 다시 한 번 느끼게 되었습니다.
이러한 관심은 나라 간의 차이보다, 비슷한 환경 속에서 살아가는 사람들의 공통점을 발견하게 해 주었고, 세계를 보다 연결된 시각으로 바라보게 만들었습니다.
3. 사회과에서 배운 내용과 앞으로 더 배우고 싶은 방향
지금까지의 전공 수업을 통해 저는 지리, 역사, 일반사회, 사회과교육론 기초 과목 등 다양한 사회과 관련 과목을 수강해 왔습니다. 이 과목들을 처음에는 개별 교과로 접했지만, 학습이 이어질수록 서로 밀접하게 연결되어 있다는 점을 이해하게 되었습니다.
지리 과목을 통해서는 자연환경이 사람들의 생활 방식과 문화에 어떤 영향을 미치는지 배우게 되었고, 역사 과목을 통해서는 과거의 사건과 선택이 현재 사회에 어떤 의미를 갖는지를 생각해 볼 수 있었습니다. 또한 일반사회 과목을 통해 정치·경제·사회 제도가 우리의 일상과 어떻게 맞닿아 있는지를 이해하게 되었습니다. 이러한 경험은 사회를 하나의 관점이 아닌, 복합적인 구조로 바라보는 시각을 길러 주었습니다.
이러한 배움을 바탕으로 앞으로의 사회과교육론에서는 사회과의 여러 영역을 통합하여 학생들의 생활과 연결된 수업을 설계하는 방법을 배우고 싶습니다. 특히 학생들이 자신이 살아가는 지역에서 출발하여 다른 지역과 나라로 시야를 확장할 수 있도록 돕는 통합적 사회과 수업에 대해 깊이 있게 학습하고자 합니다.
미래의 초등교사로서 저는 사회과를 단순한 지식 전달 교과가 아니라, 학생들이 자신과 사회, 그리고 세계를 이해하는 창이 될 수 있도록 가르치고 싶습니다.
My Favorite Place in Korea: The Han River
One of my favorite places in Korea is the Han River, which flows through the heart of Seoul.
The Han River is not just a river—it is a space where history, daily life, and culture come together.
Along the river, you can find wide parks, walking and cycling paths, and open spaces where people picnic, exercise, or simply rest. Families spend weekends here, friends gather after school or work, and tourists experience a very local side of Seoul. The river has become an important part of everyday life for many people.
At night, the Han River transforms into a completely different scene. The bridges light up in colorful patterns, and the reflection on the water creates a calm but vibrant atmosphere. It shows how a natural landscape can be harmoniously integrated into a modern city.
What makes the Han River special to me is that it clearly demonstrates how geography influences lifestyle. It is a perfect example of how natural spaces can shape culture, leisure, and community. This is also why I believe the Han River is an excellent place to understand Korea—not only as a tourist destination, but as a living, breathing city.
내가 좋아하는 한국의 장소
제가 가장 좋아하는 한국의 장소는 서울을 가로지르는 한강입니다.
한강은 단순한 강이 아니라, 역사와 일상, 그리고 문화가 함께 어우러진 공간입니다.
강을 따라 넓은 공원과 산책로, 자전거 도로가 조성되어 있어 사람들은 이곳에서 운동을 하거나, 피크닉을 즐기고, 잠시 쉬어 가기도 합니다. 주말이면 가족과 친구들이 모여 일상을 보내고, 외국인 여행자들 또한 서울의 일상적인 모습을 경험할 수 있습니다.
밤이 되면 한강은 또 다른 모습으로 변합니다. 다리의 조명이 강 위에 비치며 아름다운 야경을 만들어 내고, 도시 속 자연이 주는 여유와 안정감을 느낄 수 있습니다. 이는 자연환경이 현대 도시와 조화롭게 공존할 수 있음을 보여주는 장면입니다.
제가 한강을 좋아하는 이유는 이 공간이 지리적 환경이 사람들의 생활 방식과 문화를 어떻게 형성하는지를 잘 보여주기 때문입니다. 한강은 한국을 이해하기에 매우 좋은 장소이며, 관광지를 넘어 사람들이 실제로 살아가는 공간이라는 점에서 더욱 의미가 있다고 생각합니다.
Teaching Practice: Introduction to Incheon Cheongram Elementary School
Located in Cheongna International City, Seo-gu, Incheon, Incheon Cheongram Elementary School is a public school established in 2013. Situated at the heart of a modern and eco-friendly new town, the school provides students with a pleasant and forward-looking learning environment. Guided by its symbols—the rose as the school flower and the zelkova tree as the school tree—it strives to be a warm and reliable place of education. A kindergarten is also attached, allowing for a smooth educational transition from early childhood to elementary levels.
Currently, each class has an average of about 25 students, ensuring a stable and effective learning atmosphere. The academic achievement of the students is considered above average within the region. In addition, the school offers over 50 after-school programs, giving children opportunities to develop their talents in areas such as arts, sports, languages, and science.
Through its unique “Cheongram ABLE Curriculum,” the school fosters self-directed learning and creative growth. Students actively participate in diverse programs such as choir activities, sports festivals, and field trips, ensuring a well-rounded education that balances academics and character development.
Incheon Cheongram Elementary School is dedicated to respecting the potential of every student, creating a warm and joyful place for children to grow and thrive. 4. Teaching Practice Experience
My one-month teaching practice at Cheongram Elementary was truly rewarding. Students were cheerful and eager to learn, engaging actively in class discussions. Mentor teachers were open-minded and supportive, offering valuable feedback on my teaching methods. Above all, it was inspiring to witness and experience a genuine “student-centered education” in action.
