This week, while researching about Turkmenistan, I came across a fascinating natural formation known as the "Door to Hell." According to what I found, this crater was formed in 1971 during a natural gas drilling operation, when the ground suddenly collapsed. To prevent the spread of poisonous gases, scientists decided to set the gas on fire—and it's been burning ever since, for over 50 years.
This made me curious about how the Turkmen government views this site. Is it considered a hazard, a tourist attraction, or something else?
Also, in my world geography class, I learned about the Karakum Desert, which is one of the deserts formed due to high continentality. Now I’m wondering—what do desert landforms actually look like in this region? I’d love to see photos of both the Door to Hell and the Karakum Desert to better understand what I’ve been studying.
Hope you all have a great week ahead, and I’d really appreciate it if you could help answer my questions.
