Connectography Speech for World Environment Day 2025 | Kim Sihyun (China) | 086
Huanglong in China has been designated as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site and is in the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture of Sichuan Province. It sits at an altitude of approximately 3,000 to 3,500 meters. The name ‘Huanglong’ literally means ‘Yellow Dragon,’ which comes from the landscape that resembles a golden dragon winding through the mountains. Huanglong features a karst landscape formed by thousands of years of calcium carbonate deposition, resulting in limestone terraces. Unlike most karst formations that occur below 1,000 meters in elevation, Huanglong is in a high-altitude region averaging around 3,000 meters. The main feature of the area is the water that fills the terraced structures, which displays vivid colors such as turquoise, sky blue, and golden yellow.
In terms of climate classification within China, what climate zone does Huanglong belong to, and what are the characteristics of its annual precipitation and temperature?
It’s spring in Korea now, and flowers like forsythia and cherry blossoms have started to bloom. The temperature difference between day and night is quite big, so while it’s warm during the day, the nights are still chilly. Compared to last year, the weather feels a bit different. Last spring, the temperatures were more stable and there were fewer sudden weather changes. But this year, we've had unexpected warm days even in early spring, and more frequent fine dust alerts. These unusual patterns seem to be signs of climate change. As global temperatures rise, the seasons are becoming less predictable, and extreme weather events are becoming more common. China has set a national goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. Various policies have been introduced to meet this target. One notable example is the Yangtze River Protection Law, enacted in 2020 and implemented in 2021, which focuses on watershed management and water environment protection — the first of its kind in China. Are there any detailed plans in China to expand renewable energy or reach carbon neutrality?
