Now, I aspire to visit Japan to personally experience its unique, tranquil charm and refined culture, further enriching the boundaries of my world.

계획도시 세종에서 자란 저에게 인천에서의 대학 생활은 지리적 시야를 넓혀준 전환점이었습니다. 수도권의 역동적인 풍경을 접하며 더 넓은 세상에 대한 호기심이 생겼고, 이후 여러 국가를 여행하며 견문을 넓혀왔습니다. 이제는 일본을 방문해 그곳만의 고즈넉한 정취와 섬세한 문화를 직접 경험하며 저의 세계를 한층 더 확장해 나가고 싶습니다.

My Hometown

My hometown is Seoul, the vibrant and energetic capital of South Korea. More specifically, I was born and raised in a cozy neighborhood called Eunpyeong-gu, which lies gently at the foot of Bukhansan Mountain.

Eunpyeong-gu is a wonderful place where urban convenience and natural beauty coexist in perfect harmony. The majestic Bukhansan Mountain embraces the neighborhood, and walking along the clear Bulgwangcheon Stream allows you to fully experience the changing seasons. Even within the bustling city of Seoul, it is a warm and inviting place where you can always find comfort in nature.
Moreover, Eunpyeong-gu is a neighborhood rich in history and community spirit. You can find peace of mind at the quiet Jingwansa Temple or feel the warmth of the locals at the lively traditional markets. It is a place where the little memories embedded in every alleyway shine brighter than flashy skyscrapers.

This is where I nurtured my dreams and grew up with the people I cherish. No matter where I go, Eunpyeong-gu will always welcome me back with open arms, remaining the most precious place in my heart.

제 고향은 대한민국의 중심이자 활기찬 에너지가 가득한 도시, 서울입니다. 그중에서도 내가 태어나고 자란 곳은 북한산의 아늑한 품에 안겨 있는 은평구라는 동네예요.

은평구는 도심의 편리함과 대자연의 여유로움이 완벽하게 어우러진 곳입니다. 웅장한 북한산 자락이 동네를 포근하게 감싸 안고 있고, 맑은 불광천을 따라 걷다 보면 계절의 변화를 온몸으로 느낄 수 있죠. 복잡한 서울 안에서도 언제든 자연을 만나 위로받을 수 있는 정겨운 곳이랍니다.
또한, 은평구는 오랜 역사와 따뜻한 정이 살아 숨 쉬는 동네예요. 고즈넉한 진관사에서 마음의 평온을 찾을 수도 있고, 활기찬 전통시장에서 이웃들의 따뜻한 인심을 느낄 수도 있습니다. 화려한 빌딩 숲보다 골목길마다 깃든 소소한 추억들이 더 빛나는 곳이지요.

내가 꿈을 키우고 소중한 사람들과 함께 자라온 곳, 언제 돌아가도 늘 따뜻하게 나를 맞아주는 은평구는 영원히 내 마음속 가장 소중한 고향입니다.

My Geographical Exploration

As soon as I arrived at Incheon Station, the first thing that caught my eye was the cozy station building, bearing the traces of a long history. Remembering that this was the historic starting point of the Gyeongin Line—Korea's very first railway, opened in 1899—even its rugged exterior felt extraordinary. Unlike the grand, flashy train stations of major cities, it had a warm and calm atmosphere, making it the perfect starting point to begin a tour of modern history. Walking out of the station square, an exotic landscape unfolded just across the street. With a strange flutter in my heart, as if traveling through time and space, I moved 

Right after crossing the street from Incheon Station, I was welcomed by the majestic sight of the 'Paeru' (Pailou), a massive traditional Chinese gateway that serves as the symbol of Chinatown. The brilliant red pillars, the intricately carved golden dragon patterns, and the words 'Junghwaga' (Chinatown) clearly inscribed on a blue background loudly proclaimed that this was a mini-China inside Korea.

Passing through the Paeru and walking up the steep hill, the entire street was dyed in shades of red. I strolled past old, long-running Chinese restaurants known as the birthplace of Jajangmyeon, the historic Gonghwachun building, and exotic shops lined with red lanterns. This street, which was formed when Chinese immigrants settled here following the establishment of the Qing Dynasty consulate during the open-port period, felt like a massive open-air museum. It was a place where the lights and shadows of our modern history, as well as the history of multiculturalism, were fully preserved, going far beyond a mere tourist attraction.

After finishing my daytime historical tour, I arrived at Wolmido around sunset. The island exuded a vibrant and romantic energy that was entirely different from Chinatown. As I walked, breathing in the refreshing scent of the West Sea, the night of Wolmido woke up even more brilliantly as the darkness deepened.

In particular, the sight of the Ferris wheel spinning over the sea with flashing neon lights, alongside the silhouettes of amusement rides soaring into the sky, was enough to spark admiration. Suddenly, the historical fact that this was a fierce battleground for the Incheon Landing Operation during the Korean War crossed my mind. It left me with a strange sense of emotion and lingering resonance to think that an island once bearing the painful scars of war has now become a peaceful haven filled with people's laughter and dazzling night views.

This field trip was a time to fully experience with my own eyes and ears the keywords I had only encountered as text in textbooks: 'the open-port period,' 'modernization,' and 'the convergence of cultures.' From starting at Incheon Station, passing through the Paeru of Chinatown, to the night view of the Ferris wheel on Wolmido, I could truly feel that the Jung-gu area of Incheon is alive and breathing as one of today's most dynamic cultural and tourist spaces while holding onto its historical scars from the past. It was an excellent learning site that simultaneously showed the geographical changes of our land and the flow of history.

In the future, when I stand at the teacher's podium and use these materials, I pledge to become a guide who leads children to ask questions on their own: "What historical background is hidden in this place we are standing on, and how has it affected our lives today?"—rather than simply saying, "There is Jajangmyeon and an amusement park here."

인천역에 도착하자마자 가장 먼저 눈에 들어온 것은 오랜 세월의 흔적을 간직한 아담한 역사 건물이었다. 1899년 우리나라 최초의 철도인 경인선이 개통된 역사적인 시발점이라는 사실을 떠올리니, 투박한 외관마저도 예사롭지 않게 느껴졌다. 대도시의 화려하고 거대한 기차역들과는 달리, 정겨우면서도 차분한 분위기가 감돌아 본격적인 근대 역사 답사를 시작하기에 최적의 출발지라는 생각이 들었다. 역 광장을 나서자마자 도로 건너편으로 이국적인 풍경이 바로 펼쳐져, 마치 시공간을 이동하는 듯한 묘한 설렘을 안고 발걸음을 옮겼다.

인천역에서 길을 건너자마자 차이나타운의 상징인 거대한 중국식 전통 대문, '패루'가 웅장한 모습으로 나를 맞이했다. 화려한 붉은색 기둥과 정교하게 조각된 황금빛 용 문양, 그리고 푸른 바탕에 선명하게 새겨진 '중화가(中華街)'라는 글씨는 이곳이 한국 속의 작은 중국임을 온몸으로 뿜어내고 있었다.

패루를 통과해 경사진 언덕길을 따라 올라가니 거리 전체가 온통 붉은빛으로 물들어 있었다. 짜장면의 발상지로 알려진 오래된 중화요리 노포들과 공화춘 건물, 붉은 홍등이 조르륵 매달린 이국적인 상점가들을 거닐었다. 개항기 시절 청나라 공관이 생기면서 화교들이 정착해 형성되었다는 이 거리는, 단순한 관광지를 넘어 우리 근대사의 명암과 다문화의 역사가 고스란히 축적된 거대한 지붕 없는 박물관 같았다.

낮 동안의 역사 답사를 마치고 해질 무렵 당도한 월미도는 차이나타운과는 전혀 다른 활기차고 낭만적인 에너지를 뽐내고 있었다. 시원한 서해 바다 내음을 맡으며 걷다 보니, 어둠이 짙어질수록 월미도의 밤은 더욱 화려하게 깨어났다.

특히 바다 위로 화려한 네온사인 불빛을 반짝이며 돌아가는 대관람차와 하늘 높이 솟은 놀이기구들의 실루엣이 밤하늘을 수놓는 풍경은 감탄을 자아내기에 충분했다. 문득 이곳이 6·25 전쟁 당시 인천상륙작전의 격전지였다는 역사적 사실이 스쳐 지나갔다. 전쟁의 치열한 아픔과 상흔을 간직했던 섬이, 이제는 수많은 사람들의 웃음소리와 눈부신 야경으로 가득 찬 평화로운 휴식처가 되었다는 점에서 묘한 감동과 여운이 남았다.

이번 답사는 교과서 속 텍스트로만 접하던 '개항기', '근대화', '문화의 융합'이라는 키워드를 온전히 눈과 귀로 체험한 시간이었다. 인천역에서 출발해 차이나타운의 패루를 지나 월미도의 대관람차 야경에 이르기까지, 인천 중구 일대는 과거의 역사적 상흔을 간직한 채 오늘날 가장 역동적인 문화·관광 공간으로 살아 숨 쉬고 있음을 실감할 수 있었다. 국토의 지리적 변화와 역사의 흐름을 동시에 보여주는 훌륭한 배움의 현장이었다.

추후 교단에 서서 이 자료를 활용할 때, 단순히 "여기에 짜장면과 놀이공원이 있다"가 아니라, "우리가 딛고 선 이 장소에 어떤 역사적 배경이 숨어있고, 그것이 오늘날 우리의 삶에 어떤 영향을 주었는지" 아이들이 스스로 질문을 던질 수 있도록 이끄는 안내자가 되어야겠다고 다짐해 본다.
