Together with fellow Summer School participants Tah Ni Cole from Malaysia and Chebet Elleen from Kenya, I took part in school visits, which formed part of the activities of the 2025 GG Summer School.
On Wednesday, 27th August 2025, we visited Jangan Elementary School and Seongnam Shinheung Elementary School, where we made presentations about our countries and interacted with Korean students. The young learners were eager to know about Uganda’s famous geographical attractions, the sports played by Ugandan children, favorite local foods, and the meaning of Uganda’s national flag colors, among many other topics.
At Jangnan Elementary School, the 5th grade students warmly gifted us some handmade Korea artwork — a gesture of generosity that highlighted their excitement in meeting and exchanging with us.
Ofcourse, the generosity was also expressed by the 7th grade Shinheung Elementary School students who gifted us many gifts like Korean snacks,
On Friday, 29th August 2025, we continued with visits to Wirye Hanbit Elementary School and Ewoo High School. What fascinated me most was the presentation by the Wirye Hanbit Elementary students. They showcased Korean culture, K-pop, sports, and tourist attractions, with impressive English proficiency and communication skills. This experience reminded me of the importance of exposing African students to similar opportunities for cultural exchange, as it enhances confidence, expression, and learning.
At Ewoo High School, we engaged in thought-provoking discussions with students, who asked about Uganda–South Korea relations, Uganda’s perspectives on the Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power (KHNP) contract with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, as well as national challenges such as unemployment and food insecurity — and how the Ugandan government is addressing them.
