Hello? Nice to meet you. My name is Sujin Lim. I live in the state of Colima, located on the Pacific coast of central-western Mexico, and I work as a professor at the College of Political and Social Sciences at the University of Colima. I study and teach with my students about how this world is structured, how it operates, why countries collaborate, and why they engage in conflict.
I studied geography. Ever since I was young, I have always been curious about who lives beyond where I live, how they live, and what those places are like. This curiosity led me to frequently look at maps. The maps I could see at that time were those "atlas for Social Studies" or "Geography Atlas" that were distributed along with geography textbooks in middle and high school. I studied those maps until they were worn out. Perhaps it is only natural that I ended up studying geography. Thus, I became a geographer, studied Latin America, and now I live here in Latin America.
I was born in South Korea and lived there for 30 years, and I have been living in Latin America for 25 years. I believe that simply living my day-to-day life here is a form of study. As a geographer who has moved away from the place where I was born and raised to live in this unfamiliar territory, I think everything I see, hear, and feel here can be excellent keys to better understanding this region.
I am also very pleased to meet you at the Great Geographic Society. I will be here for South Korean youth who are curious about Latin America and want to learn more, as well as for Latin American youth who are curious about South Korea and wish to know more.
Great Geographic Society

Hola, buenos días, tardes y noches.
Mucho gusto saludarles a ustedes.
How was your journey to study geography? I'm very interested in studying it in college, but I'm afraid there won't be many opportunities in Brazil. Could you tell me more about how you chose your profession?
ReplyDeleteThank you for your question. Actually, when I studied geography in Korea, many people had the same thoughts as you. They said there would be very few job opportunities if I majored in geography. Even my parents and teachers tried to discourage me from choosing geography. But really, is there anyone who can predict future opportunities in advance? Even if there is only one opportunity in the world, if that opportunity comes to me, then for me, it becomes a 100% chance. What I want to say is this: study what you truly want to study. And if that is geography, then I think that's even better — because you’ve already said you're interested in it. And if you do study geography, I believe there will be plenty of future opportunities in your country, Brazil, related to geography. The most important thing is to study what you truly want to! If you do what you truly want to do, I believe that opportunities will naturally come to you. After studying geography, don't feel like you have to look for opportunities only within Brazil. You might actually find many more opportunities outside of Brazil. So I hope you'll have the courage to pursue the studies you truly want to do. Be brave.
DeleteHello I have a question. Brazil and South Korea have different ecosystems because of their unique climates and altitudes. In Brazil, the Amazon Rainforest thrives at lower altitudes, while higher areas have fewer types of plants and animals. In South Korea, the environment changes with altitude, from forests at lower levels to alpine areas with different plants and animals as you go higher. How does the change in altitude affect the types of plants and animals found in each country? What challenges might Brazil and South Korea face in protecting these ecosystems as they change with altitude?
ReplyDeleteThank you for your question. You made a comparison between Brazil and Korea — that's a very original and thoughtful idea. Let's take a moment to think about it a bit more. First of all, Brazil is a much larger country than Korea. This means that not only the altitude but also the latitude across Brazil is far more varied than in Korea. So it's only natural that the ecosystems where animals and plants live would also be quite different.
DeleteTo be honest, I haven’t had the chance to visit Brazil yet. Even so, to give you a simple answer to your question — environmental policies in each country need to take into account not only latitude and altitude, but also many other complex factors. Of course, there may be common challenges that both Korea and Brazil face. But I also believe there are unique situations that are specific to each country.
I’ll keep thinking more about this, and I’d love to continue this conversation with you. Thank you again
Hello, My name is Ji Yu. I have questions of Latin America.
ReplyDeleteLocated in Latin America, especially Brazil, the Amazon rainforest is playing an important role in the ecosystem of the world, which is called the 'Earth's lungs'. When I heard about the rapid destruction of the rainforest in the news and newspaper articles, I questioned it. Why are you artificially burning the Amazon? The most widely known cause of rainforest destruction is climate change, and the possibility of spontaneous ignition is increasing due to the prolonged dry season due to global warming. However, artificial wildfires are also caused by the Brazilian government. It was shocking to deliberately burn forests to expand infrastructure and secure farmland.
What are the reactions of other countries to this destruction of the Amazon rainforest? And what activities are you doing to address this? Also, I wonder how the shrinking of the Amazon rainforest will affect Latin Americans.
Thank you for the great question. Regarding the Amazon wildfires, I’m sharing the link to the following article. I hope you find it helpful. https://www.hani.co.kr/arti/international/america/1175953.html;
