Lake Kivu, located on the western border of Burundi, is one of the large lakes in East Africa, known for its deep and clear waters. It lies at an altitude of 1,459 meters and has a surface area of 2,370 square kilometers (some sources state 2,700 square kilometers). Its maximum depth is said to be 485 meters, making it the 18th deepest lake in the world. Additionally, it is home to Idjwi Island, the 10th largest island in a lake worldwide. The name "Kivu" means "lake" in the Bantu language.
