As Typhoon Kanoon approached, causing participants of the "2023
Sae Man Geum World Scout Jamboree" (Jam Berry) to evacuate early, churches
have stepped up by opening prayer centers, training centers, and educational
facilities to provide shelter. The 37,000 Jam Berry members from 156 countries
were dispersed on the 8th among 1,014 buses to Seoul, Gyeonggi, Jeonbuk,
Chungnam, Chungbuk, and eight other provinces. Among them, it's estimated that
around 5,000 are being accommodated by major Korean churches as of today.
According to the Korea Church Council (represented by Pastor Lee
Young-hoon), the Yoido Full Gospel Church in Seoul has refurbished the Choija
Memorial Hall and the Youngsan Training Center in Paju, Gyeonggi Province, to
provide accommodation for Jam Berry members. Approximately 2,100 members from
Korea (about 1,600), France (about 360), and Spain (about 220) have found
refuge there.
Yongin's New Eden Church (Pastor So Kang-seok) welcomed 480 members
from Korea and China. The church is pouring its available budget and manpower
to the maximum for them. They have opened around ten accommodation spaces
including the church's educational center. New bedding has been ordered for the
members, and the bathrooms have been modified to allow for showers. At the
entrance, medical personnel from the church's medical treatment team tended to
the health of the members, conducting rapid antigen tests for COVID-19 and
checking temperatures.
