GINUE Friend: Park Seungmin from Incheon Korea to Austraila

My name is Park Seung Min. My name was given to me by my maternal grandmother, and in Chinese characters, it consists of 'Seung' (勝), meaning 'to win', and 'Min' (敏), meaning 'quick-witted' or 'agile'. The meaning behind my name is to act swiftly in every situation and to achieve victory. I have never given myself an English name, and the name listed in my passport is Park Seung Min.

My hometown is located in Bu-gae-dong, Bupyeong-gu, Incheon. It is within walking distance (about 10 minutes) from the nearby subway stations, 'Samsan Gymnasium' (Line 7) and 'Gulpocheon' stations, making it a well-connected area. Compared to surrounding regions, it is known for having a good educational district, so I was able to attend elementary, middle, and high school all within the vicinity of my home. As a result, whenever I walk around my neighborhood, I often recall memories from my school days. Living in the same area for over 20 years can make one’s perspective narrow and limit the opportunity for diverse experiences, which is a disadvantage. However, on the other hand, I believe that this long-term residence has allowed me to develop a deep affection for and thorough understanding of the area I live in. While there aren't many natural environmental features due to the extensive development that has taken place, as I mentioned earlier, the area is still known for its convenience in transportation and the presence of apartments and shopping malls, which keeps the population density consistently high. Currently, due to my academic commitments, I reside in the dormitory at Kyongin National University of Education's Gyeonggi campus, located in Manan-gu, Anyang-si, Gyeonggi Province. Sharing space with others in the dormitory is not something I'm used to, but I am appreciating the experience and making the most of each day here

 1. 제 이름은 박승민입니다. 저의 이름은 외할머니께서 지어주셨으며, 한자로는 '이길 승(勝)'에 '민첩할 민(敏)'을 사용하여 매 순간에 민첩하게 대처하며 승리를 거두라는 의미를 담고 있습니다. 영어 이름은 딱히 지은 적은 없고, 여권에 기재된 이름은 Park Seung Min입니다. 

 

2. 제 본가는 인천광역시 부평구 부개동에 위치하며, 근처에는 7호선 ‘삼산체육관’역과 ‘굴포천’역이 도보로 10분 거리 내에 있는 역세권입니다. 주변 지역과 비교하여 학군이 모여있는 편이라 초, 중, 고를 모두 집 근처로 다닐 수 있었고 그렇기에 아직도 동네를 다니면 학창 시절의 추억이 떠오르곤 합니다. 20년 넘는 세월 동안 한 지역에만 거주하게 되면 세상을 보는 시야가 편협해지고 다양한 경험을 하지 못할 수 있다는 단점이 먼저 보일 수 있지만, 반대로 저는 그만큼 제가 거주하는 이 지역을 애정하고 잘 알고 있다는 장점이 있다고 생각합니다. 지금은 많은 개발이 이루어진 상태라 자연 환경적 특징은 딱히 존재하지 않지만, 앞서 언급한 것처럼 교통이 편리하고 아파트와 마트 등의 요소가 있어 인구 밀집도는 지속적으로 높은 것이 특징이라고 할 수 있습니다. 현재는 학업적인 문제로 경인교육대학교 경기캠퍼스 기숙사(경기도 안양시 만안구)에 위치하고 있습니다. 기숙사에서 여러 사람들과 공간을 공유한다는 것이 저에게는 그리 익숙한 일은 아니지만, 이곳에서의 경험도 소중하다는 생각을 하며 하루하루를 보내고 있습니다.

 

3. 사회과의 영역은 상당히 넓다고 생각합니다. 우리 삶 전반에 걸쳐 있으며, 우리가 인지하지 못하고 있는 순간에도 그와 관련된 경험을 하고 있을 것입니다. 그렇기에 가장 인상 깊었던 경험을 공유해보자면 고등학교 때와 올해 겨울인 것 같습니다. 저는 고등학교 때 인문계 학생으로, 여러 사회 선택 과목을 수강하였습니다. 그 중, 아직도 기억에 남는 과목은 ‘경제’입니다. 저의 고등학교 경제 선생님께서는 모의 주식을 한 후에 같은 반 수강생 중 수익률이 가장 높은 상위 3명에게 만점을 주는 수행평가를 진행하셨습니다. 실제가 아닌 가상의 돈으로써 투자하는 것이기에 현실과는 약간 다른 부분이 있었지만, 이전까지는 주식을 비롯한 경제에 대해 아무것도 모르던 저에게 많은 지식과 경험, 그리고 흥미를 주었던 소중한 경험이었습니다. 마지막에는 수익률 3위 안에 들며 해당 수행평가에서 만점을 받은 것 또한 좋은 기억으로 남을 수 있는 요소였던 것 같습니다. 저는 이번 겨울방학에 학교 졸업 요건을 달성하기 위해 한국사 능력 검정 시험을 공부하였습니다. 학창시절에도 역사는 저의 최애 과목이었던 만큼 최태성 선생님의 무료 강의를 들으며 공부하는 기간은 즐거웠고 방학을 헛되이 보내지 않고 목표를 달성하였다는 점이 좋았습니다. 단순히 고득점을 하기 위한 공부가 아닌, 과거의 잘못과 실수를 반복하지 않기 위해 우리가 어떠한 노력을 해야 하는지를 느끼며 뜻깊은 시간을 보낼 수 있었습니다.

 

 

4. 이번 강좌를 통해 사회과에 대한 견문을 확장하고, 예비 교사로서 사회과교육 전반에 대한 이해를 높이며 초등학생들에게 사회과가 주는 의미가 무엇인지, 또 그들에게 어떠한 방식으로 소개할지를 통찰할 수 있는 능력을 기르고 싶습니다. 특히 제가 좋아하는 역사에 비해 상대적으로 지식이 얕고 흥미가 적은 지리에 초점을 맞추어 공부하고 싶다는 개인적인 바람도 있습니다. 훌륭한 학우들과 훌륭한 교수님과 함께 좋은 내용으로 만나게 될 앞으로의 시간들이 기대됩니다^^

I attended both elementary and middle school within a ten-minute walk from my home. Because of this, I have fond memories of running around and playing with my friends on the elementary school playground, which used to have a grassy field, during lunch breaks or after school. Although it has now been replaced with a dirt field due to government policies, whenever I pass by the area, the memories of my school days come flooding back.

Near my house, there was also a public library open to everyone. It wasn’t just a quiet place to read books—on the first floor, there was a lounge where we could buy snacks from the tteokbokki and dumpling shops right in front of the library. After enjoying our treats, my friends and I would head to the e-book section on the second floor to read, and during exam periods, we would study together and help each other out.

Having lived in this neighborhood for nearly twenty years, I’ve been to many different restaurants, but there’s one in particular that has stayed in the same spot all these years and has become my personal favorite. It doesn’t serve anything fancy or expensive, but the dishes prepared by the elderly couple who run the place have a special homemade taste. Whenever I return home from my university dormitory, I always make sure to stop by. If I ever get the chance to introduce my hometown to people from other countries through this class, this is definitely the restaurant I would want to share with them.

저는 초등학교와 중학교를 집에서 도보로 10분 내에 위치한 곳으로 다녔습니다. 그렇기에 점심시간이나 학교가 끝난 이후에는 한때 잔디가 있었던 초등학교 운동장에서 친구들과 뛰놀며 놀았던 기억이 있습니다. 지금은 정부 정책으로 인해 흙 운동장으로 바뀐 모습이지만 아직도 주변을 지나갈 학창시절의 기억이 떠오르곤 합니다. 

또한 제 집 근처에는 모두가 이용할 수 있는 도서관이 하나 있었습니다. 단순히 조용하게 책을 읽는 공간일뿐만 아니라 1층에는 휴게실이 있어 도서관 앞에 있는 떡볶이 집과 만두 집에서 간식을 사서 먹은 후, 친구들과 2층의 전자책 코너에 가서 읽기도 하며 시험 기간에는 공부를 하면서 서로 도움을 주었던 경험 또한 있습니다. 

저는 이 지역에 20년 가까이 살면서 여러 음식점들에 가보았지만 그 긴 세월동안 변함없이 자리를 지키며 저의 맛집으로 애착하는 음식점이 있습니다. 특별하게 비싸거나 고급 음식을 파는 곳은 아니지만 노부부님의 손맛으로 가끔씩 대학교 기숙사에 있다가 본가를 갈 때에면 항상 찾는 곳입니다. 만약 이번 수업을 계기로 다른 나라의 사람들과 소통을 이어나가게 되어 우리 고장을 소개할 기회가 생긴다면 꼭 이 음식점을 소개하고 싶습니다.
