Connectography Speech for World Environment Day 2025 | Kim Sunghyun (Cuba) | 017
1. Cuba's Coral Reef Areas
Cuba is home to one of the largest and healthiest coral reef systems in the world, forming a crucial marine ecosystem in the Caribbean Sea. Cuba's coral reefs are ecologically valuable globally and host a wide variety of marine life. The coral reefs in Cuba remain in healthy condition, and the biodiversity is rich. Key coral reef areas in Cuba include Jardines de la Reina, Zapata Peninsula, and the Canarreos Archipelago. These regions are all designated marine protected areas, playing a significant role in the preservation of the coral reefs and their surrounding ecosystems.
2. Cuba's Karst Terrain
Located in the western part of Cuba, the Sierra de los Órganos forms part of the Guaniguanico mountain range, along with the Sierra del Rosario mountain range. The terrain in this area is mainly composed of limestone, creating a karst landscape. Particularly, the Viñales Valley in this region is so valuable that it has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. The karst landscape in Sierra de los Órganos is characterized by mogotes—rounded, steep-walled limestone hills. Additionally, one can observe karst features such as dolines and limestone caves in the area.
The weather in Korea is perfect. It’s warm and the flowers are in full of bloom. People are active and enjoy outings. They usually enjoy cherry blossom festivals. It is held in many places so that we can fully enjoy the joy of spring. However when it’s spring the fine dust and yellow dust covers the sky very often because the wind blows from China.
Recently I feel that the global warming is really happening. In March we had a snow and the weather in spring gets colder. I realize that we need to do something before it gets an irreversible condition. In Koera The Ministry of Environment has announced several plans to innovate environmental regulations. The key points are as follows. The Ministry will move from a closed regulation where everything is prohibited except what is allowed, to an open regulation approach, where everything is allowed except what is specifically banned. Chemical substance regulations will be applied based on their risk level, reducing excessive regulations on low-risk substances while enhancing safety measures for high-risk materials. The environmental impact assessment system will be improved to increase communication between businesses and local residents, ensuring greater transparency in the evaluation process. The Ministry will promote carbon neutrality by refining the emissions trading system, boosting carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS), and enhancing the recycling of electric vehicle batteries to support the transition to a green society. New support measures will be introduced to assist small and medium-sized enterprises in complying with environmental regulations and developing green industries. The Ministry aims to foster innovation in the private sector, meet environmental policy goals, and create a better environment for both the public and businesses through these regulatory changes.
