Ajou University staff appeared busy on this day as they prepared to welcome over 200 Canadian Jamboree participants who evacuated from the Saemangeum area in North Jeolla Province due to the landing of Typhoon "Kanun."
The Canadian delegation arrived in the afternoon and is scheduled to stay at Ajou University's Ilsin Hall (International Dormitory) for four nights and five days until their departure on the 12th.
The Ajou University staff displayed a message on a large screen at the auditorium stage saying, "Welcome to Ajou University!"
Upon their arrival on campus, the Jamboree participants will attend an orientation session at the Yulgok Hall auditorium before proceeding to the dormitories.
The dormitory where they will stay was completed in February 2022 and can accommodate over 800 students. It features shared laundry rooms, kitchens, cafes, convenience stores, as well as fitness and lounge facilities on the basement and 11th floor. The Jamboree participants will be assigned to twin rooms and will utilize the dormitory until their departure.
Around 1:00 a.m. on this day, approximately 130 Icelandic Jamboree participants arrived at the dormitory. Additional participants from other countries are expected to arrive at Kyunggi University later in the afternoon.
Kyunggi University staff and the police station are focusing on measures such as monitoring for hidden cameras in the dormitory building and implementing COVID-19 prevention measures, including hand sanitizing and temperature checks.
Despite expressing disappointment about leaving the Saemangeum camp due to the organizers' lack of preparation, the Jamboree participants hope to enjoy their remaining time and make pleasant memories during their stay in Gyeonggi Province.
One Icelandic participant, Siheringka (14), said, "I was really looking forward to the Saemangeum Jamboree camp, so I'm very sad and regretful to leave. There was a promise that it would get better, and I thought I could do camping activities that I wanted, so I'm even more disappointed."
She continued, "I'm expected to go outside today, but I haven't received any plans yet. Since we came suddenly last night, we are still resting and waiting. It was very hot and difficult, but here is air-conditioned and the facilities are good."
Another participant, Logifriedrickshon (17), said, "It was too hot to the point of getting sunburned, but still, it was a fun time. It was a special experience. The shower rooms and toilets were really dirty. There was a lot of sand, and there weren't many places to wash, so that part was difficult."
He added, "We haven't heard our schedule yet. There will be a meeting soon, so I'm expected to receive it through the meeting. I want to have a good time and bring back good memories from Gyeonggi Province."
Korean students hoped that the Jamboree participants, who traveled far overseas for the event, would be able to create precious memories during their stay and return home safely.
One university student said, "In the morning, when Icelandic students passed by the hallway, some of them greeted me with eye contact or actively talked to me. I heard that they came suddenly like this, but I hope they have a good time staying in our dormitory."
Local government and university officials reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring the comfort of the Jamboree participants throughout their stay, despite the sudden decision to relocate.
